  • Buildup on Headlights

Anyone noticed any buildup on their headlights?

Mostly noticeable during night when headlights are on, you can see some stains on the headlights. I know it's not on the inside because I can temporarily remove it with my finger only to re-appear moments later. It looks like some over spray from the headlight washers although I seriously doubt it could have stained from that. Also, it is mostly concentrated toward the middle of the car and it gets less obvious towards the sides.

It can't be UV damage because the car is only two years old. (I had a brand new mazda for 5 years with the headlights looking brand new for the entire time)

Not sure what else I can try for a spotless finish. Any similar issues before from anyone?

Can you upload a pic? Are the headlights rough to the touch (could be overspray or some kind of fallout)??

As you mentioned, i also doubt that it would be UV damage on such a new car - but it's possible that it may be.

Have you tried some light polish to see if you can remove whatever it is on the lights? Normal car polish is fine, just dont use a heavy cut (T-Cut rubbish) type polish.

That's exactly what I see when the lights are on. As I said I can temporarily remove it in one spot, only to re-appear again moments later.

Strange - as you mentioned, it looks like a spray of some kind (car wash etc??)

Try the some car polish to see if that gets it off (it wont do any harm what so ever)

What additive are you putting in your washer fluid

Only purchased the car 2 months ago so haven't touch the washer fluid. I do remember accidentally spraying the headlights though on the drive home from the dealer so could be that.

Ill try with some polish tonight.

The light pattern of overspray doesn't streak towards the rear , which would indicate its happened when the car was stationary.

Maybe ask the Dealer if you can speak to their Pre-Delivery manager and find out what they use on the Front Bar / Bonnets typically.

Might be a Quick Detailer of some kind ???

It's definitely the washer additive. I used to get the exact same build up on my headlights when I first purchased the golf. So far it's stopped after just filling the reservoir with water.

Certainly not from the cleaning spray if proper fluid is being used. The damage is from strong chemical being sprayed in them. You will likely see the damage on other parts in the same general area.

Does the washer fluid get mixed with water? Was it in the right ratio?

That's happened to the plastic trim on my R, after using bug and tar remover and not removing it/wiping it off properly - you can wipe it off, but will reappear.. I had to polish bits to get them off, give head lights a good clean, and try plastX plastic polish, worked for me!
