  • 118TSI drinking oil

    Hi Everyone,

I have one of the 118Kw twin charged motor/7speed dog gearbox combos in the golf I have owned since new.

The car has just done 26,000 klms in 2.5 years and 3 months, back the oil warning light came on so I checked the oil and ended up putting in a litre. A few weeks later same thing and another 500ml. Then had my 30,000klm service earlywhere the engine oil was replaced. 2 weeks back I had to put in another 500ml.

The upshot is the engine appears to have consumed 2L of oil in less than 2,000klm.

I questioned this with VW who grandly proclaimed that " The VW group allow for 500ml of oil to be consumed every 1,000klm". Am curious to know if this more whitewashing from VW.

Has anyone had a similar issue?

Before the trolls come out - No, I do not trash the car whilst driving!

Might be worth instigating an oil consumption test with your dealership.

      Thanks.

A bit wary of my dealer - at the last service car was there overnight. When I picked up the car I noticed the left rear seat headrest was down. I thought perhaps one of the staff had taken it home overnight for a test and had picked up their kid or something. Only when washing the car did I notice paint pissing from the edge of the door.

No-one sits in the bag seat of my car and I am wondering if it happened at the Parammata dealer.

        cracked ring lands ??

If your willing to travel down south to the Shire I can put you in touch with a dealer who actually gives a damn and will look after you. Service manager drives an R and is an enthusiast. There's always a couple of 118s in there getting new engines DSGs and so on

Sure thanking you. Used to work out Taren Point so the shire is not an issue for me.

Could someone Please clarify if the correct amount of oil usage has increased to 1lt every 1,000 km for all volkswagen vehicles? I presumed this was the latest figures from Volkswagen.

              1LT per 1000km is outrageous.

The correct amount of oil usage should be 0.0L . Having to pour $20 of oil into your engine every 1,000km is just ridiculous and i cant believe people accept this as being normal/ok.

                My Golf R doesn't use a drop.

Fuel efficiency by way of reduced friction, comes at the cost of increased oil consumption.

I'd expect a small amount of oil use, but not several litres between services.

Take it into the mountains and give it a flogging.

Obviously babying it hasn't worked. Haha

I agree with what you are saying 100%. But there should be a compromise and it should be kept under control. 1L every 1000-2000km is ridiculous though. A few hundred ml's every now and then should be more like it.

I don't agree with babying them when new, either.

Just drive it normally. So what if it starts burning oil at 300,000kms? With the way we consume cars these days, it'll be on the scrap heap anyway.

No, I don't believe the issue of 118tsi using oil or having any problems has ever come up on this forum.

try googling this site:vwwatercooled.com.au 118 tsi oil consumption

Still maximum 500ml/1000km after the first 5000km cause you have to run them in.
