  • Intake Whistle

Recently installed a tarmac intake on my mk6 gti and noticed a slight whistle when decently accelerating. Had an apr stage 1 flash performed on Friday and now the whistle is massively prominent on acceleration. I've done some googling and intake harmonics comes up a lot with people divided as to what causes the issue and what the fix may be. A lot of people seem to upgrade the factory diverter valve to the rev d version as a fix. Anybody else had/have a whistling intake noise?

    Intake Whistle

What you are hearing is your turbo. That whisling/sucking noise is the sound a turbo makes.

Appreciate your advice, but no its not. I know what the sound of a turbo is. This is a harmonic sound that is like a musical whistle in a very specific part of the rev band. There are numerous videos on YouTube of others experiencing this.

I got the whistle after doing the APR stage 2 ECU flash
It's higher boost and airflow whistling through the air pipe plumbing
90% of this whistle went away when I upgraded the intercooler

Here is the whistle prior to the intercooler upgrade

It could possibly be some sort of resonance or echo due to the pipework on the intake? I know the Volant intakes are a plastic/polymer construction and therefore are generally quieter than most other aftermarket intakes (that use alloy piping), but could be the case.

Also check that your MAF sensor near the battery is secured correctly and not allowing any air to leak past it, as this may cause some noise. Also check your hose clamp connections and silicone joiner where the intake joins the turbo inlet, as the silicone joiners that come with these Volant intakes are pretty weak/crap (thin) and make sure the pipe hasn't been pinched/ripped etc and allowing air to leak past.

Hi Boriskov, i think you may have emailed me about it?

I can tell you exactly why its doing it.

The problem is the design on the small K03 turbo and running more boost and air flow. There is a small tube/pipe coming off the turbo (only on the K03, the K04 is different) and you increase air flow and boost the harmonics change and you get whistle like you are blowing on a top of a glass beer bottle. You cant really get away from it unless you change turbo's, its just the way its designed, all intakes that i know of do it with that turbo.

^ same noise my mates Mk5 GTI makes then. Both his AWE and Forge intake had the same sound. Blowing on the top of a beer bottle is a perfect way to describe it.

Oh i actually thought is was just the Mk6 Gti because the turbo is slightly different. But there you go, its on the mk5 as well, ive not personally heard this on the mk5 but its obviously there. Thanks Lucas.

Just dont drill extra breather holes in the intake pipe

Hi Boriskov. I don't know if you've resolved your issue yet or not, but I had this exact problem with "goose honk" after installing my Volant CAI also. After much research I took a punt and bought the GFB DV+ and installed it to my type C DV (minus the 'basket' -- as per the instructions in the box). Problem solved.

I've got this same problem. Just installed the tarmac CAI and have a very prominent whistle on hard acceleration.

MK532, you have a MK6 GTI with the DV C?

I've been slack and haven't done anything about this yet. Anybody got any tips to access the DV? I've read you can take off the drivers side wheel and arch lining to save having to get under the car?
