  • changed from golf R to volvo v40

Hi I own a golf 2.0tdi and just got rid of my golf R
I was very happy with the 2 cars until my tdi needed the dsg fixed $4000 cost
the dsg is unreliable over time
I loved the golf R but wasn't going to hold on to it and wait for the dsg to go in that as well
Every person I know that has a dsg has had problems if they hold on to it
So started to look for a new car other than a golf
    I got a Volvo v40 diesel auto 130kw 400nm 6 speed auto
And yes I never thought I would buy a Volvo
I had it for the weekend and bought one straight away
Build quality is better than a golf IMO and it looks better than a golf
and will never have to worry about a dsg again

I've had 3x DSG cars, 45K in the first with no problems, 90K in the second with no problems, 45K in the third and the only thing I need to do is get the latest software version with no actual issues. All depends on the car, the way it's driven and the way it is maintained. Sometimes you just get a lemon.

If Volvo put out the Polestar C30 version, I'd probably agree, but the DSG is really good!

Volvo's implementation of the DSG was highly unsatisfying to drive. Never switching up or down in manual mode when you wanted, much less in auto mode.

I could never go back to old skool torque converters which sap any low end torque from most engines. That said I hear the 8 speeders in BMWs are quite usable.

As for VW DSGs, this is our sixth DSG in the family. So far only one has had a catastrophic failure (my dad's Touran 1.4 turbocharged) which was replaced under warranty. The rest (Golf 6 77TSI, Golf 5 GTI, Tiguan 155TSI and a Golf 7 1.4 Sports) have been fine.

DSG... DCT... PDK... more and more manufacturers are taking up the tech. Even Honda (conservative and boring for the last 10 or so years) is now thinking of it.

Well you dragged your Golf R as well, so the stress of doing that would add to the likely hood of failure.

I saw a new Volvo V40 on the weekend - and although they aren't my type of car, they do look quite nice i have to agree.

But hardly long term ownership. 250K on each of them and we might be more impressed. And how many expensive 60K services would that involve?

All done in 5 years, including track work. There's not too many around with 250K on them???

So, to recap, in my experience I've owned a DSG box for 4.5 years, three different vehicles and a total of 180K with no issues.

Thanks for your contribution Mountainman, I assume you have one with 250K on it, any problems or great experiences???

Yes I dragged mine but it came out of the factory with launch control
so why would dragging it hurt the dsg if the box can't Handel it don't put on launch control

So, you should keep the record of reporting the DSG malfunction and still requested the repair at no cost to you.

Yes it was recorded and it was fixed at vws cost
Yes other manufacturers are bringing out dsg gear boxes eg nissan gtr
                            They don't have any problems
I'm just saying vws dsg is unreliable in my experience

Nissan have problems with the gtr transmission, even for bog stock cars. That's no secret.
For the record I had a mk5 GTI for almost 6 years, 99000km, no real issues.
