Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Golf R louder...

    Hi Guys,

When my R is cold and idling, it sounds very loud, I actually quite like the sound (I suppose you could say it sounds raw). But then after it begins to heat up it becomes much quieter, I'd like to know what causes this?

I know it's not the flap in the exhaust, since I originally thought it was and I've disconnected the vacuum hose going to it.

    Any ideas??

Some kind of catalyst warm up cycle. But from what I have read it is just running richer which wouldn't account for the sound change also...

I've noticed that from cold the ECU map for warm-up it will raise the idle (you might notice on the rpm gauge) and enrich the fuel (you can smell it). This puts the engine RPM at an acoustic sweet spot which makes it sound boomy. Remembering also there's that stupid sound actuator mirroring the engine rpm. The combined effect is the boomy sound you hear. You can use your foot and raise the idle to the same level and get the same effect.
