Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Water pump and timing belt...HELP!!

    Hi all,

New to the forum and hoping to get some advise/help.

Have a 2009 MK6 GTI with 48000km. Just experienced low coolant, went to get it checked out and was advised that it needs a new water pump and timing belt. I told the guy that the same thing happened 2 years ago when the car was 1 year old and that I wouldn't expect a 2 year old part to fail so soon. They want to charge me $1500 for the work which I'm reluctant to do of course. The other kicker is that it was serviced last October and these were checked and passed.

Why would the timing belt need changing when the water pump is failing? Would I be advised to ignore the timing belt work?

Has anyone had this come up so soon in the car's life? What sort of pushback can I used with VW?

I have had 2 water pumps fail in 3 years (15k & 45K). If the car is just out of warranty VW may cover the cost of parts or the entire cost depending on whether or not the car has been serviced by a VW dealer as an act of 'Goodwill', their words not mine

I recently had to replace the manifold outside of warranty (by 4 months) VW covered parts, but not labour as I had the car serviced by VW specialists. The manifold was replaced by a friendly VW dealer, who argued my case for me.

and no water-pumps (and manifolds for that matter) shouldn't be failing so soon or regularly.

Perhaps the workshop in question, was considering replacing the drive belt for the water pump?

Agree with umainaa. They might be talking about belt for the pump. If not get the hell away from that dealer or mechanic they otherwise have no clue about Volkswagen cars.

The part replaced when the car was only 1 year old should have a 2 year warranty on the part through vw....
