The US build Golf R are from early this year, most of us with R's here would be 2011 builds (MY12 is still 2011 build typically). From following most of those vortex threads (new ones crop up daily), it seems batch related to Feb/March built units.
Well my MY12 golf R with under 14k kms had a water pump failure which I am told shredded the bearings and killed the engine New engine will be replaced under warranty fortunately.
I'm not sure what the build date is but it was delivered mid 2012.
I had a broken water pump that just happened this week and made one of the pistons shoot out. VW said they would get me an engine replacement and I've only done 8,500kms.
Golf R MY12 - had plans to this and that but you know how it is
What is engine date of manufacture? This occurred to many Golf R in U.S. manufactured in early 2012.
The piston wouldn't have shot out, it would have collided with valves though and smashed top of piston, bent rods, bent valves. Is not pretty...
The VW mechanic said that to me so I was just quoting him, the water pump broke which made the valve break and in turn the piston shot out. I know the whole piston can't actually blow out of an engine block because it's held down with the conrod but I understood what he meant by saying the piston shot out. It didn't literally mean the piston shot out like a bullet.
My car was manufactured early 2012 so maybe I was one of the unlucky ones.

I have a question regarding water pump failures. Those being reported here and in the USA are being repaired/replaced under warranty as all the vehicles are less than 3 years old.
1. What happens to a vehicle that suffers the same failure and subsequent damage after the 3 year factory warranty has expired?
2. The extended warranty policies may not pick up the tab as they have numerous clauses regarding fan belts and timing chains being classed as wear & tear items not covered including subsequent damage from failures not covered.
Now: 2018 Mk 7.5 Golf R Grid Ed | Man | White Silver Metallic
Past: 1994 Subaru Liberty RS | Man | White
........2000 Nissan 200SX S15 Spec S | Man | Red
........2011 Mk VI Golf 118 TSI | Man | Candy White
The car has come back with a new engine after 3 weeks in the shop.
I was told that the water pump had failed and bent the valves. According to the guy I was dealing with he has never seen this before and said 'it's just one of those things'. He was not aware of the water pump saga in the U.S.
