Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

The two engines are very different so not surprising they run different temperatures.

My MKV GTI used to run around 90 celsius though
I topped her up before i left , non used with 1500km , have added in 8500km about 1 litre .

The 08 occy RS never used any oil till about 10,000km .

Funny i miss that gruffy bad boy sound of the RS stage1 , MK6 just less mean .

Oil temp in Tiggy hit 112 one day over Christmas road trip coming home from S.A. It was 45 outside, had the roof rack loaded up & was sitting on 110. It's normally on 100, may go up to around 104 on a spirited run.

Tig 115 up the Glouster Mountains (NSW) warm day but not over 30. Big mountain drive. Had to stop at a look out to give it a breather (leaving the engine on).

yeah the GTI must run higher temps for whatever reason. Plus the QLD humidity doesn't help either I think.

Golf R DSG - normally around 95c, one stinking hot day I saw that it went up to 98c travelling an indicated 123kmh on the freeway.

By the time I hit the freeway from home or work it is over 70c so that is when I will open it up, depending on traffic.

As to the correct oil temp, the temp doesn't show until 50c so if VW wanted the oil to be hotter before you opened it up, would they have kept the temp reading blank until the desired temp is reached? Following this logic then 50c would be ok?

Minimum of 70. Pref. 80 for me.

At the moment I'm running around 87 because it's cooler and I'm doing highway stuff.

Agreed. NSW/Vic guys don't have to deal with sub 30 degree days 8 months a year!

My mk6 GTI sits on 98-101 on average around town driving on most days. The highest I've had it is 114 on a run through some mountains on a 28 degree day.

another way of running lower temp: drive on stock tune

stock tune: lower boost, lower temp, quieter induction / intake noise, quieter exhaust note

Can work in reverse at low to mid range rpm with a tune retuning lower engine temps than a stock tune, marginally

8-11 miles normal driving (residential - 70kph zones), or 15 miles if you get straight onto the freeway....

then, feel free to mash it
