How long to you keep your Golf?

    I usually like to keep a car for 5-6 years.. lucky to break 100K on the clock.. my parents retired up the coast so a few more clicks will be on it this round. But unlike a previous poster I have no desire for anything else out there, the R has ticked all the boxes for me..

      so you don't think you"re head will be turned by the Mk7 R SilverF?

      I tend to hold cars for approx 4 years: like to offload at below 80km to ensure and ever reliable car with modern/state of te art conveniences (especially safety features which continuously improve). hoping my Gti when it arrives in a few months fits the bill! 3 year lease then I"ll be the new mk7 Gti or perhaps the R, something to look forward to

        But u have essentially bought a car near the end of its life cycle already, the mk6 was released in 09. Therefore, although new, the car in tech terms is old compared to the mk7 due out soon (depending on who u listen to). Wouldn't u be better off waiting for the mk7, them holding it for the 5 years of a lease and staying well on top of modern tech? Rather than buying a "old" model that has seen tech surpass it?

          fair point, but the next Gti likely 18months away....can't wait that long

            Pffft.. I thought the Liberty Gen V would have done that when I owned the Gen IV. What a complete F@rk up that was. The other side of this coin is getting a car at the end of it's life generally means the gremlins have been addressed and it is pretty solid aka VL commodore.

            The MK7 might be new but what comes with it ?

            In 5 years I might also have to act my age :S and get something else

              I couldnt agree more from what i have read the next R wont be released until around 18 months after the MK 7 is released so my 3 year lease should be up and I can get a MK7 maybe but by then i will be over 50 so will have to go with something else maybe lol

                I am a 1966 so we are in the same head space..

                See what is around then but right now the R does everything I ever wanted and everything I currently want.. When the billy lids are gone it is a whole new ball game.. though I have my wife on my case about a EOS

                  Depends on how good the new Mark 7 Golf GTD or GTI will be? Otherwise the MK6 Golf GTI has been fabulous. Rekindled my desire for the MK6 GTI with addition of VW Driver Gear Sport Springs ... just what the doctor ordered. Maybe go for a manual next time, if there is a next time, moreso for driver involvement than anything else. Although a 7-speed dry clutch DSG in a Mark 7 GTI/GTD may be more maintenance with need to change clutches like manual aroud 60,000km. DSG in MK5-6 is a wet clutch and like a motor cycle clutch, is designed to slip and should in theory last the lifetime of the motor as a sealed unit. Main issues with DSG are mechatronics unit and sensors.

                    the gti is my first golf. my plan was to keep it 10 years ! hehe

                    but yeah 3 year lease is coming up this time next year and getting a bit of an itch hehe

                    do I buy it out, do I extend lease for another year gives time to see what the mk7 is all about. and what else is on the market.

                    longest I've kept a car was 7 years, shortest 3 years turning over on end of lease. I tend to hang onto a car if its a good'un and turn em over if there is a good reason to
                    Once had a Red mk6 GTI + DSG + leather + sunroof + mdi + towbar

                    now have a gorgeous Red Merc A250 AMG Sport
