  • How long to you keep your Golf?

    Hi All

Whats the view of the optimum time to hold on to your golf (GTI)?

I'm impatiently waiting for my MK6 GTI which i won't receive for another 5 months! Planning on a 3 year lease and then the question will be whether to hold on for a another 1-2 years (it'll still be awesome for some time!) or change over to the MK7 (GTI or upgrade to the R).

Will the MK7 have an impact on resale values (presume so). Whats the general view on GTI resale value? (mine will be an unmodded cw 5 dr, dsg, nab, roof, rvc, tint). Notice that quite a few guys on this forum have flipped there car pretty quickly, not ideal I would think. Any thoughts appreciated.

    cheers

I guess its really subjective to what you want, and how much money you have. In 2010 I picked up an Mk5 GTI which was just under 4yrs old at the time for exactly 50% of what the owner had purchased it new for, so if you hold on to it for 4 years expect to sell your MK6 GTI for around low 20's.

The Mk7 will certainly effect resale, but the GTI seems to hold its value quiet well all things considered, att least It did for the MK5 but that could have been because the Mk6 didnt offer many changes in the way of performance or style.

Look up redbook, pick a 2009 model and that will give you an idea of how much a 3 yr old GTI could be worth

My previous cars I've kept for a relatively long time, first car was a civic, kept for 8 years, s2000, kept for 7 years, wrx oly had for 2.5 year, evo9 had for 4 years.
The gti, I have leased for 4, but I think I'll refinance again. It does everything I need

Just had a work colleague see me today his 2007 GTD has done a DSG gearbox VW wants $10K to replace it. So not sure keeping a VW long term is always wise then again its a risk you take with any car I guess.

thats why i bought a manual. actually, i bought a manual because i think its a better drive, but the dsg issue also rated somewhere into the buying decision
