thanks again for all the comments: best thing I can do I think is drive both again and see what feels best! Try and forget about fuel economy and focus on the drive experience. As I recall could'nt stop smiling with the GTI but at the same time was trying to discount it thinking to myself "should buy GTD, more sensible, good economy, good drive, best of both worlds". Just hoping the dealer is understanding about second thoughts having put in the GTD order albeit only 2 weeks ago- and 5 months wait as well (VW Camberwell)....
I went through the exact same dilemma you are... coming out of a tuned/CAI 6.0lt V8 Calais which was a blast into something where I was dead set on fuel economy (20lt per 100km in city traffic in the holden). Drove the GTD as I had my head set on it. It was okay in the DSG and the dealer was great because we went to some new roads where nothing was built and I got to fang it. Finished the drive thinking well that was good but not a lot of fun.
Went back and got the GTI and again to the same streets. It was bloody fantastic - had the wife in the front seat and dealer in the back and he was like "yeah why dont you give it some" which I did. The difference was night and day and really for the difference in fuel economy the choice was a no brainer. I put a deposit on the GTI as soon as we got back. Maybe if I had driven the manual GTD it would have been a different story but I didnt and I am still really happy with my choice. I never ever think "gee I should have got the one with better fuel economy..." I do tell people how much I still love driving Candy (that's her name) even after a year it is as much fun as the day I test drove it with the dealer.
First time behind you I thought I'll only be half throttling. lol. When twisties started I was 'WTF' had a chuckle and had to boot it.
I bought my R from Burwin Ferntree Gully so it was close to the twisties which is great when test driving.
on that first cruise, i didnt know anything about my suspension / tyre pressures, so i had the car set up ALL wrong. i've sorted it out now, so it's much much better, apart from the fact that it's off the road because the clutch is broken, haha!
and yeah, burwin is awesome - i've test driven cars there half a dozen times and the dealer has NEVER sat in the car with us - guess which roads we drive to straight away
regarding GTD vs GTI ''debate'' - andrew, is it a normal GTI you're looking at, or the ed35? (because i would think that'd make the decision significantly easier )
Well all (and thanks for those comments Gti11.5, we're definately on the same page), just off the phone from the dealer and no dramas with the switch: they are looking at sourcing a GTI for me now (5 DR, cw, dsg, detroits, sunroof, nav, rvc, tinting). Given my options list may be a struggle to find one in the country (?), in any case it'll be worth the wait!

Oh good, you went with heart thing.
Suggest to drop tinting and nav. Go with Xenon instead.
Nav can retrofit later with ebay purchase. Tinting can do elsewhere.
Yeah, heart over head! Will probably amend options and drop nav/tinting (aftermarket)- the only other option I think I will add is ACC (just trolled through 25 pages of plus/minus discussion on this!!)- like the idea of the more comfy ride on the 18" detroits.
Now the bad news- will be a new build and they dont expect until September

6 Months is about standard now for factory builds.
Mine was 4 months but that was almost 2 years ago.

Be flexible on colours or some of the options and you will get one sooner. I was in the same position, wanted red but happy to settle for white and get the car three months sooner (still took three months from order to delivery)
Of course if you get the options as ordered and indicated above you and I will have twin cars.... noice !
GTD would have been delivered July per dealer as less demand (huge demand for GTI of course).
Re my options, just realised I am restricted in aftermarket add ons as this is a lease car (all options must be on at time of purchase/lease). Whilst I dont "need" nav and sunroof just adds to the lustre and finish of this beautiful vehicle. So be patient and wait; also gives me tons of time for an orderly sale of existing car on private market.

LOL!
Hard for me to go past "appliance white" and the options we selected. How are you finding the ACC? Got a photo of your rig?

I originally wanted Tornado Red without ACC but definately with the RVC as I have a (now) 7 year old and wanted to be as safe as possible around him. Due to availability I ended up taking the CW with ACC because it was the only one with RVC/Sunroof I could get without a special order. The dealer did the BT/MDI but using factory parts so I was happy to accept a car ordered without so long as they were installed in PD. THey werent but it was remedied soon after anyway.
So life with ACC/DCC - well I am very happy I got the car with it although if I hadnt then I don't really know if I would miss it. I drive it in Normal mode generally but when I put the DSG into S I put the ACC on Sport and have a very good time. I rarely if ever use comfort - we have a big wagon for comfort driving...
