Noise when turning off car after a decent run

Hi,

Just started this. After a run of say 50 or more kms, when turning my car off, I know I sometimes hear the fan in the engine bay running for a while, but recently it's starting to sound like a flock of seagulls under there! Particularly so on a warmer day, and we've had a few in Perth recently. As I say, it's after a good run, primarily when hot.

I actually took audio of this noise with my iPhone's recorder to play the service guys!

Thoughts? Worries? My 15000 service is due in about a month or so, wait til then, or get it in earlier? Thanks.

I get the same fan noise- it can last for up to ten minutes. Had it on the weekend after a similar run, in ~30c heat.

Pretty normal for the car in my experience!

It's just the car cooling down some of the components and circulating oil to the turbo etc. nothing to worry about.

This is perfectly normal. It keeps the fan going to prevent heat soak.

It's definately normal.

Although it seems random, as it doesn't happen all the time, it will only do it if certain parameters are met. Such as ambient temperature, engine temperature, and drive time.

Don't stress about battery voltage, if it falls too low, the whole sequence wont happen.

The Golf has a very powerful battery. I've run the RNS510 for over an hour just on battery (updating firmware, reloading maps and music, have also watched DVDs for a long time on battery).

The cool down mode shouldn't last more than 20 minutes top.

After a quick RNP cruise the fan was on for 5 mins after switched off - just need some cool air

Not sure about all Golf models but with the GTI and R there is an auxiliary water pump (electrical) that circulates water in the opposite direction to the mechanical water pump after you stop. It runs cooler water through the turbo and engine after you stop so that the heat sink doesn't damage turbo bearind etc. I believe it can run for up to 15 min but I'm assuming it's all dependant on a number of temperature readings at the time of engine shut down.

I came across the diagram of the pump and it's reverse circulation some time back. Didn't keep a copy. A quick google may find teh diagram. IIRC it was in a VW training dcoument.
