Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Agree with brimway, it will be nice to have one of each.

I have never had an automatic car but for GTI i chose DSG for the following reasons:
    - I love the way it farts
    - It's kind of manual as well

    Cheers,

On my MKV GTI, was only the 60,000km service that was pricey but the advantages and fun from the DSG far outweigh any costs. Manual just seems so boring in comparison

I went DSG, and to be frank ( cause he is kewl) it was the reason I went with the Golf over the others in the class as they only come in manual. I really enjoy just how smooth the gear change is and the almost linear delivery of power.

The days of the manual are numbered, so for those that embrace them enjoy while you can

I've only ever owned manuals, and I've never driven an auto that I liked. So when the choice of manual or DSG came along I wasn't willing to risk disliking the DSG and being stuck with it, even though it sounded like it was probably okay. Whereas with a manual I knew I'd be happy.

DSG for me, had my share of manuals and autos over the years. DSG just something a little different. Started driving autos because the cars I had didn't make them in manuals.

Have no real bias either way except to say I'm not disappointed in my choice this time round. Next set of wheels just might be a manual.

DSG. Buying a new car for a new job, didn't have the luxury to specify, and there was a red GTD with DSG available as a cancelled order. It felt like serendipity.

At the time I was expecting to end up with a manual (cheaper, better fit to the budget I had set) but I don't regret the DSG.

Often drive into Melbourne and not a fan of the 3rd pedal in stop-start traffic.
Being in the gaming generation I wanted DSG paddles.
In theory reselling a DSG should be easier too (assuming it's still working).

DSG on my R, because that's all that was available on showroom floors in the state and the whole country. Wasn't in a position to order & wait....if I was, it would have been manual.

It's interesting seeing the current split manual to dsg... The way my dealer was talking when I asked for a manual made me feel like I was ordering the wrong thing. "What? You want a manual one? I haven't sold one of those in months... They are pretty hard to come by". Ended up going to another dealer (lol) and this thread (even though the sample is from such a small base of owners), is interesting. Many more manuals on the road than I thought...

I had the similar experience, dealers were kind of shocked when i showed more interest in Manual.

Manual.....no choice as it was a demo.

But am glad I got it given my original $$$ was on a Polo GTI = DSG only.

The 5% club doesn't appear as exclusive so far as previously led to believe - wonder how many are yet to vote

I would say both... But short term more so. Look at it this way, if you had a manual and wanted to sell it, you either take a massive hit on a trade (as the dealer would not move it quickly hence will take a safety margin as they have a floorplan finance for holding stock) or wait to sell it privatey where demand isn't as great.

glad I didn't buy the GTI, as a 'rational decision' otherwise I would be driving a Toyota Camry

the last rational car I bought lasted 18 months, before I had to sell it !
