    Ahh thanks,

Although the diesel probably suits the way I drive, apparently it's not great if you don't do a lot of long trips so I'll probably stick with the TSI and listen carefully for the dreaded squeak

Before I get to asking questions, a little background => Recently I posted this in the first post section:

I'm looking to buy a golf (Mk6) here in Aus and any advice would be greatly appreciated I have a few questions I need help on:

      1) Considering that the Mk7 is coming soon in the near future, is this a good time to buy a new mk6 golf? I'm guessing I could get a cheap deal if I look for one now. I suppose my question should be, when is a good time to buy a new mk6 golf?

      2) In terms of engine reliability, is it fair to assume that the diesel version (103kw) is a little more reliable than the petrol (118kw) version?

      3) Following on from the previous question, I have noticed that VW Australia has not advertised a manual gearbox version of the diesel golf (103kw). Has this been discontinued? If not, do I just ask the dealer?
      "

Since then, I have received a call from vw aus saying that there is no manual option for the 103TDI Comfortline. Is this because it is discontinued or it never existed? I'd be curious to know if anyone else has one (mk6 version).

If there isn't a manual version I was now thinking of getting a 90TSI Trendline version with this so called "Comfort Pack" so it is very similar to the 118TSI Comfortline with the exception of the engine. My question is, does anyone have a list of all the changes between the 118TSI Comfortline and the 90TSI (including the Comfort Pack)? I could be wrong but maybe the Comfort Pack is discontinued but I'm sure I saw some cars on carsales that had it.

I don't mind the smaller engine because I'm a pretty passive driver and I thought I didn't need the zippy 118TSI. I'm sure it's a great car but I just thought the diesel would probably suit my style more originally but now the 90TSI looks appealing...
I have a 90TSI. I quite like it, and it goes better than the 90kW figure would suggest. The massive (for a 1.4 litre petrol engine) low down torque helps. Aspects of the comfort pack are now standard. I think the 77TSI has replaced the original 90TSI and the current 90TSI is roughly equivalent to the original comfort pack version.

        Oh ok thanks,

I'll probably go for a second-hand 118TSI and see what I can find. I'll go find the second-hand hand thread and post some questions there.

        Thanks again!

          Just revive a dead thread:

I am only now FINALLY moving to OZ. Yes, it took this long to get my papers. Never thought it would but at least it's happening.

Anyway, back on point, I'm still looking at grabbing a Golf, only now I'm also looking at maybe going used. So with that in mind, is this good value?

I'm more concerned with any mechanical issues that the MKVI models are known for, and if there is anything I should be looking out for? I still haven't ruled out going new but would like to pick your minds first before going that route. That car linked above, is that a fair value for that car?

          Thanks!

          And ConR, PM sent

Check out the thread http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...4s4-44540.html . I don't think the issue has been resolved as we still get reports of failures as well as excessive oil use. Plus there is the push to try and get a recall for the 7 speed DSG http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...ore-85499.html - this in the 6R Polo forum but that car uses the same transmission and a slightly tuned up version of the 118 TSi twincharger

            I'm guessing you've read this thread http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...ead-62278.html

I still think the TDi is the better choice, especially if you are still going to be doing the commute that you originally anticipated

Thank you for that, I wasn't aware of some that info you provided.

EDIT: I just got through reading the first 16 pages of that engine failure thread (what's the deal with some posts being deleted and a note about threats from VW???) and some of the DSG issues and I think I might pass on the Golf. I'd hate to have any of that ever happen to me, especially in unfamiliar territory. Even the TDI, I think I'll pass. Or not, guess we'll see.

              Thanks again to everyone.

Congrats on the move... Indeed it would be devastating to have any of this happen... When I first joined this forum the 118TSI engine failure thread was in full swing (there hadn't been a fix from VW at that time).. It was one of the reasons I went for the TDI instead of the TSI...

3 Yrs later and my car has has not had an ounce of trouble (even better than my Corolla which for some reason liked to murder alternators)... The DSG is still as smooth as the day I bought it

                Regards,
                Anthony.

Hah, the VW stuff was my fault.

As for you being scared off buying a VW because of that thread it's a shame. The mk6 diesels are excellent and get very few issues. They don't blow up engines and they don't get DSG issues (unless it's the 1.6l 77kw TDI). While you may have heard about injector failures, that was for the mk5 golf with Pumpe duse injectors. The MK6 use Piezo crystal injectors (later models might use solenoid injectors that look very similar to piezo ones) and there's very few failures with them. Main issue you may see with the TDI mk6 would be a blocked DPF and this is caused by short trip city driving. If you're doing any sort of distance then it won't be an issue.
