GTI Orange oil light - interstate ACT

Howdy guys,

I've moved interstate - to ACT, and the orange oil light has started to come up in the last few days.

At my old dealership I could just turn up without a booking and they'd top it up for free while I sipped on coffee in the lounge.

Just wandering if this will also be the case at a VW dealership in Canberra? I didn't buy the car down here so will they charge me for it? Do I need to book in a time? I'm still under warranty - only have had the car for about 9 months.

Any VW dealer should do it for free. I had the same thing in VIC and just popped into the nearest dealer who did it while I waited.

Then again, might be worth buying a bottle of the good stuff anyway?

Maybe I'm over cautious, but i'd never rely on a dash light to tell me the car needs oil... Or wait to get it topped up. Dipstick ftw...

SuperHans, there are two VW dealerships in Canberra. Start with Gerald Slaven. One of their staff is a member here, he is very helpful, and the feedback from most people here is great. I'm sure they'll look after you.

However, have to agree with Illutible on checking regularly and not relying on the dash lights

My dealer told me to keep an eye on my car while it was running in. I had asked for some oil to do it myself. All they told me is to bring it in they will do it for free for me. They told me it was special run in oil that I can't buy. Just wondering is this true? Never heard of special run in oil that you can't buy.

Also try Grant (service) or Andrew (sales) at Lennock. But for either Lennock of Gerald Slaven I'd recommend calling up first to introduce yourself etc, rather than simply rocking up to blag some free oil.

I've got 4x bottles of the '1L' VW branded Castrol oil from Gerald Slaven from servicing and, being nice to the service staff! It all helps...

I check the oil in my cars every week - regardless of whether they have driven 10km or 500km. My R hasnt used a drop of oil at this stage (6 months/5,000km) but i still check it religiously.

This rumour about "special run in oil" is total rubbish by the way. They are factory filled with Castrol Longlife III oil. I have 2x brothers who have worked at Audi for about 10 years combined - both have done factory tours and training in Germany and confirmed it's a load of bull. Even the mighty R8's get normal oil.

This is also backed up in this quote by Castrol which can be found on the link below "Majority of all new VW cars are first-filled with Castrol SLX Professional Powerflow Longlife III"

I have always used the Longlife 3 oil in my GTI, its great stuff...
