Yeah... I did that, and people called wanting to know what was wrong with it. Other's called wanting to negotiate over the phone. Some called say they're buying it for their wife/son/daughter and they only have x amount a few K under the asking price.
So being realistic doesn't always help...

Even if you are only doing the "idiotic" thing, as you call it, and advertising at a sensible price that is also the lowest price you are prepared to accept and people try and haggle, it makes for a very short phone call or meeting. You just say "Thanks, but no thanks". They either agree to the asking price or move one. Either way, you don't waste a lot of time.

Just paid 34.5k for 6sp with 36000km. I loved the charcoal colour.
Only options were the MDI.
I watched for months and I believe I got "market value". I think 33k would of been a better price but I was sick of waiting around. From my own observations, silvers definitely are much harder to sell and 2 doors are hard to sell as well. Mine was the cheapest GTI in Australia but probably not the best value for $$
There are some better value deals on carsales, but anything in the high 30's makes me think "might as get a brand new one"

new vs 2nd hand 118
I'm considering a manual 118 with metallic paint.
options:
2009, 39000kms, no bluetooth or mdi, 9 months warranty left.
new MY11 with bluetooth and mdi.
What price difference would be significant enough to consider the second hand one? Currently it's 5k but I need to have a cut-off point in my negotiations.
Does anyone know what it would cost to buy 3 year extended warranty on the second hand one?

If you're looking at a car that's over 2 years old you should be saving much more than 5k. Brand new cars depreciate much more than 2.5k a year. Especially in their first year. I bought mine a couple of months ago, also over 2 years old, for a saving of about 9k (MY09 90TSI DSG with comfort pack).
Unless you're looking at buying from a dealer? If the car is still under manufacturer warranty anyway I personally don't see the point in spending the extra 5k to get it from dealer.

2010 GTI value?
What are your thoughts on the value of a 5 door silver GTI manual leather 18" Detroits new Contis build May 2010 compliance July 2010 39,200km but first service only done at 23,000km (that really is a big barrier to me) and the second in July, appears in almost new condition and drives like it? VW Wippells in Toowoomba are asking $36490 and is a local car serviced there.
One of my kids wants to buy our 90TSI so there will be no trade.Nov '15 Polo 81TSI manual white

I don't think it's too badly priced from a main dealer. I would question why the first service was done at 23k. My first service was done at 1.5k and the next one is due at 16k. Same car. When I was looking for a GTI last month, there was one in a dealer in ACT similar spec/milage to the one your looking at, and that was 36k. If you want to purchase from a main dealer, then i think that's what you'll pay. You may find one cheaper in a private sale if you wish to go down that path.2010 Candy White Golf GTI 5Dr. Manual, RNS-510, Bluetooth, Tints, GT-CX 18 Gloss Black Rims.

And the fact that its silver works in your favour as no one is really chasing silver..
My R was 58k RRP... i didnt offer them 57...I offered 51. ended up payin 51,900..
I still think if you are willing to pay 36k for a second hand car with 30,000 k's, why would you just spend the extra 5 and get a brand new one.. that no one has damaged, no one has touched, never been driven, hasnt missed services etc.. 23,000 k's on the run in oil... pass!nom nom nom
