Maybe because the equivalent spec'd car would not be 5K extra, rather 15K extra. 5 DR GTI manual with leather, 18 Detroits would set you back $50K after GST, then there's the lead time on getting one.

I saved around $6k buying a ex demonstrator with 2000Kms on the clock, so even though it was year old, it was as new. Why pay full RRP if your happy to make small compromises.

Missed 1st service with that many kms, keep looking. There are plenty of other low kms manuals that have well looked after for that sort of money.

Not from a dealer. When I was looking 3 weeks ago, there was only two 5 door manuals for the sub $40k. One on VIC and one in ACT. Plenty of DSG's tho.

The equivalent new onroad price for that manual GTI with leather, Detroits and metallic paint is $50,000 at that dealer and there would be a considerable wait. Yeah, both prices can be talked down but the reality is there is $14,000 difference. I'm just a cash buyer, no loans, leases or corporate discounts, looking at a the best value for a product I would like. I want a manual 5 door in silver if I get a GTI.

They are not drive away prices for a brand new car built to order with the specs you've listed. They are ex all government charges, which once you add on, you get to the price I estimated. Yes, you can buy second hand for those prices, but the post I originally quoted, was saying you can buy a brand new one for $40k.

50k is RRP driveway... I had a deal on a GTI originally and it was 41k with cloth/manual candy white.. Withe detroits.. That was driveway.. So add leather for say 2.5/3k and you get approx 43.5-44k ..
Keep in mind there are a fair few cars on boats which aren't assigned to customers yet so the wait could be very minimal..

If you want to buy a second hand gti for 36k.. Your a fool. Why do people buy GTI's and R's? ..to drive them hard.. Same with wrxs, evos etc.. And one that has missed services? Yup it's had a hard life.

Not everyone is in a position, financially, to purchase new. So second hand is the only option. To say people buy GTI's to drive them hard is a ridiculous generalisation. Some people buy them, myself included, not to thrash the living daylights out of it.

When the time comes to sell yours, I wonder if you will tell the buyer that he is a fool to buy second hand, I'm guessing not.

The reality is the difference in price between new and this example is $14,000. That's a lot on a car that is just 1 year old, has registration, new tyres, is close to the specs I'd choose if buying new and doesn't have an order wait. It hasn't missed a service - just done way too late, does have two years factory warranty left and is visually in top nick. It certainly doesn't have the stone chips that my similar age and milage Golf has. The former owner must have taken a huge hit in depreciation, maybe around $20,000 for 1 year of ownership. That's 40%

Even if you are only doing the "idiotic" thing, as you call it, and advertising at a sensible price that is also the lowest price you are prepared to accept and people try and haggle, it makes for a very short phone call or meeting. You just say "Thanks, but no thanks". They either agree to the asking price or move one. Either way, you don't waste a lot of time.
Having sold my car in the last few weeks after pricing it reasonably, I agree with you. However, answering the same questions and allaying fears regarding accident history etc a thousand times for the virtual tire kickers does get old fast and, as Corey said, everyone still wants a few thousand off the price, even if you've priced the car at the lower end of the scale and they know it's a good deal. I was disapointed with some of the "serious" buyers though, and ended up asking for a holding deposit after being "stood up" by a couple of buyers. I did get the sale though, at the price I advertised at, and after all the phonecalls that ended up being more a relief than anything else. This haggling thing is for the birds. People should be able to buy something without feeling forced to fight for a "bargain". Here's a product, this is how much it costs, can you afford it or not? It should be that simple.

Just going on from that. My original thought was a GTI. I had a white, manual, detriots with leather organised. I was looking at $42500 driveaway on that. And that was without serious haggling.

So true! But today's Golfs are different to the mk IV gen, where you buy a GTI or Bora 4motion and you get the sunroof and leather.... My dad wanted a new GTI with all the options, but then I had to tell him that the new models have 'options', and adding it all together would take the car around 58k...

Annoying as hell. Audi does this too. Why can't they just make a model with all the options and sell it ?
