  • GTI Red Grille Stripes

Hi, did a search for this here and couldn't find anything so here goes.....

Has anyone tried to re-colour the GTI front grille red stripes?

I have a new white with 18" detroits and sunroof to be delivered soon (I hope) and I really like the contrasting black and white of the white GTI. the wheels and sunroof with the dark tint add even more contrast to the white... So I am thinking of:
    • Go with darkest tint I can
    • Get lights done in smokey tint
    • Change the grille stripes to black or metal like the GTD grille

Probably not everyone's cup of tea and yes I understand tradition and the red stripe, but I am not a traditional kinda guy....

Is there a type of tape you can use, automotive in black and/or a brushed aluminium or something available? Where can you get it from?

I have noticed some US threads on the topic and they talk about tape... not sure what type ... also saw some pics of the GTD - looks very nice in black with the silver grille stripes... bit off track!

    Any ideas out there?

    thanks in advance

Any competent painter / bodyshop can make them black for you. They'll just mask it up and paint it. Maybe even without dismantling the grill.

To make them Chrome, you'd need someone who can do chrome plating... (chrome paint imo looks rubbish compared to proper chrome).

Black pin stripe should do the trick. I like your idea.

We've had the red stripes painted for a customer at work. It turned out the way the customer wanted, so smiles all round.

There is always the option of ordering a brand new grille with badge and emblem and paint it yourself. That way you have the original to go back.

Alright - some great info there guys.....

I am thinking the pin stripe option will be the easiest to reverse and I can do it myself.

Some of the cars in the linked threads look great with the red stripe gone.....

So how thick is the tape itself Vacu? Like is it very thin, unlike electrical tape which is quite heavy??

Has anyone tried electrical tape?? Any success, does it look good?

I think all gtis other than red look better with either black or matte type aluminium finish..... The red one it blends in and looks ok.

              Cheers

Pin-striping tape is usually adhesive vinyl, which is quite durable, and wont shrink and come off like electrical tape would.

Don't bother with electrical tape unless it's for a mock up or only temporary. It will peel off and fade etc

Edit - removed already will re apply when I have more time to cut everything out nicely

                          I reckon this looks cool!

I wouldn't personally do it, but looks very cool.
I liken it to a black Ferrari.
You would want to get it, but couldn't look passed getting a red one.
