The problem with modern diesels doing a lot of short distance commuting relates to the particulate filters, which need the engine to get to a certain temperature and to continue to run for a set time in order for the particulate filter to clean itself out.

Google "DPF blocked" for further info on the problem.

Short trips are bad for both petrol and diesel engines as nothing actually warms up properly IMO. Garage queens are the worse, as they have oil leaks from sitting around, clogged plugs and filters, oil contamination, hardening belts, square tyres etc

So when shopping for a used Golf I'm better to go for a high mileage one rather than low? i.e. 49K "ex-lease" vs 6K "owned by an old couple"

Second that. The general advice around at the moment is that If you do mostly short trips and don't get over 60 kph, the current DPF technology is not suitable.

From staying safe on the road to fuel advice and driving abroad, here's everything drivers need to know.

There also seems to be a growing number of businesses that offer to remove the DPF and reflash the ECU, although I'm pretty sure that would be illegal in this country.
