  • USED 118TSI vs 103TDI

    Hi Guys,

    First time poster (be kind).

I know there have been several threads comparing the above models when NEW, but how about USED?

'09 models of both (with DSG) are starting at around $25,500. That's $10K off the new price of a 118 and $12.5K off a 103.
With the $2.5K difference between the two removed (normal argument as to why the 118 is better) then the 103 has to be the better buy, right?

My question though is why has the 103 depreciated faster than the 118? It's not the number for sale (carsales.com.au had 97 of each) so is the price of diesel reducing its popularity?
Would the 103 keep depreciating faster or level out?

    Interested in your thoughts.

A: there are a lot of variables in the prices... eg: factory options that come with the car

A: depends on what depreciation rate you want to use, DV method if you want it to depreciate faster early on :p

I had a Mk6 118TSI before and there were just too many problems with the 7 speed DSG and 1.4L twincharge engine.

Go with TDI and get Bluefin Stage 1 to make it as powerful as a GTD.

I guess you're right. Red Book still shows $2K difference in average used values. Sorry to hear about your problems. What are you driving now?

the options on both cars are probably different. the condition is another thing, maybe the TDI has a couple more scratches.

i doubt either of them will lose its value significantly faster than the other. the TDI might be more reliable though. the twincharger engines tend to have more problems, especially the earlier ones. there is also the issue of the supercharger squeal which vw has yet to solve. then again, not all of them get it.

I doubt the price of diesel is a factor. Well maybe it is, but the tdi would still be cheaper to run than the 118.

The tdi is better value if both are available at the same price in my opinion.

          +1

I fitted a reputable brand tuning box to mine, crazy amount of torque and even lower fuel consumption when cruising.

The only issue is that I'm currently only doing 8,000 km per year (mostly short trips) and I understand the TDi's don't like this.
Mind you, I'm sure I'll be more inclined to put bigger mileage on a new drive

You can read all sorts of things regarding diesels and short trips, but the fact of it is that a major manufacturer would hardly release a car that was not suited to driving short distances. If you are concerned about short trips then warm it up before driving off. Hell that's just good practice with any internal combustion engine....

Short trips will, however, increase the average fuel consumption of the diesel (and also the 118 gasser) so perhaps factor that into your decsion.

8000 km's? Forget the vw, you need a pushbike....

Wrong... it's bad practise to warm an engine PRIOR to driving off. It's in the manual

Depends how you drive I guess.

If you pussy foot around you won't need to warm the engine before driving.

it's not really a depending on how you drive question.
Long periods of idling is not good for the engine, and is listed under the "severe conditions" which requires 7500km/6month servicing instead 15000km/12 month servicing.
Even if you idle for 30 mins so your engine is warm, you're then driving away and nothing else on the car is warm (gearbox, bearings, brakes, etc)
Warming up the engine before driving is illegal in some countries.

So for those of us that commute in Sydney traffic, we all need 6 month servicing? Leaning towards the TSI now
