Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Help choosing Golf!

    Hi All

Been reading this forum for probably the last 3 weeks after i wrote off my old jazz. Basically im needing a new car. Atm i was originally going to buy a second hand Tubro DSG Jetta. Over the weekend i test drove the Golf 118TSI and loved it even more than the 118TSI Jetta.

Now, i've gone up and down the golf section probably 3 times and I've had alook at the excel spreadsheet that was used for a rough pricing guide, but its a bit outdated.

My question to the Golf owners, given that the 90TSI comes withe comfort pack as a standard now, would it still be worthwile paying the additional 5kish and opting for the 118TSI over the 90TSI? Are the any benefits worth 5k to push towards the 118TSI over the 90TS? E.g. the option of having ACC?

Would it be also better to just buy the 90TSI and maybe tuning it 2-3years down the track to make it more or less around the 118TSI's speed?

    Any input would be great!

    Thanks!

PS - the only options i would probably be looking at are metallic paint/MDI/maybe sunroof depending on price.

Guess the best answer is drive them both and decide

i think the main difference is the extra supercharger on the 118TSI. you get zero turbo lag, though the lag on the 90 should be minimal. i'm sure you can chip the 90 to give you 118 performance.

many have claimed to have a squeal from supercharger with no real fix so far. however, that being said, mine is quiet as. try them both then decide if the supercharger is worth the extra dough.

If you want performance in your drive thats what you need to get .

In saying that, the 118TSI can chipped to a healthy 150-odd kilowatts.

The 90TSI does not belong in the same sentence as the word performance.

Anyone who disagrees is just trying not to hurt anyones feelings.

If you want cheap, practical just get a 90 or 77.

If you want some zipp like a corolla or mazda 3 get the 118TSI.

If you want a smile on your face, see above!

          Welcome to the forum!

PS never get the lesser model if you know you might extract more down the line. It will just end up costing a fortune. After countless WRX and not going the STI, I had to get the R this time.

However have you considered a Jetta 147TSI? Same motor as the Mk V GTI and with the Mk VI Jetta imminent you may find some low km 2nd hand examples at a reasonable price. My wife has one and it's a ripper of drive, needs stiffer suspension and a meatier exhaust note though.

Good hunting for your new ride and Welcome

I'd go the 90TSI. My friend has a 118 TSI and he's on his third engine! Still has the squeak sound.

dare I say it? If you were considering Jetta but would also like the convenience of a hatch......
Octavia 90tsi sedan/hatch - you'll get a 5,000km MY11 demo for as cheap as $24k drive-away (before even haggling). ~$25k for a brand new one (if you can find one).

Octavia 118TSI (which is actualy a 1.8 turbo & usually puts out closer to 123kw) from about $31k

Octavia RS 147TSI from $34k for the MY10(2009)

They are all there on carsales.com

I have considered the Jetta Turbo DSG. The 118kw was the first VW i test drove, so considering the 06-09 Turbo DSG is 147kw, im sure its alot more fun

In regards to it, I would prefer the golf over the Jetta, but i wouldnt be disappointed with the old Mk V Jetta. My only problem is trying to convice those who are lending me the money to let me buy the car!

I guess that the only way to decide what to buy is what YOU want.

Like everyone else here, I too lusted after the GTI / R but for what I needed the car for, the 90TSI does me just fine (I had to order the comfort pack as an option). 12months on...it is the best car I have ever owned, is SOOOO cheap to run and hasn't missed a beat, first service came and went and unlike a lot of owners here, mine had not used a single drop of oil in 15000km.

No it's not a GTI or an R and if that is what you REALLY want, you will be sadly disappointed with the 90TSI but if you are comparing it with the other hatchbacks in it's market, in my opinion, the VW is head and shoulders above the rest....not something you can easily put your finger on...it just feels "right".

If you really want the extra performance that the larger engines provide, buy the bigger engine to start with because down the track...no matter what mods you make, what tune you put through the ECU...it will still be a 90TSI

I worked in a car dealership for many years and the thing that used to amaze me was how many people were bitterly disappointed because they bought the car that their friends, family etc wanted and not what they wanted. By all means ask opinions (everyone has one) but buy the car you want.

i may have to test drive the 90tsi and see what it feels like. i havent really driven any vw less than 100kw.

out of curiousity, i probably will look at a second hand 09 golf. for those who own the 90tsi, do you think the comfort pack is something is necessary for the 90tsi? is the 90tsi without the comfort pack just too "bare"?

                        thanks

If you are looking at an 09 90TSI I would find one with the comfort pack. It comes with alloys, leather steering wheel/gear lever (wheel has audio controls and controls for the MFD that the base one misses out on) It also has the MFD, cruise control, dual zone climate control air con, auto lights and wipers etc etc. It takes the 90TSI (Trendline) to roughly the same specs as the 118 Comfortline.

As for the less than 100kw...it is the torque that impressed me - 200Nm

                          That's my opinion...but I'm biased

+100. So so true...if the wallet allows it, I say let your heart be your guide.

To OP - no point buying the 90/118TSI if you truly want the GTI/R. Just end up torturing yourself. Life is short, every missed opportunity is, well, a missed opportunity. Hope you end up with what you want.

thanks for everyones reply. the GTI/R were never an option for me; but thanks for the input.

My options were always the 90/118. I test drove the 103TDI and i guess if the 90TSI is somewhat near that ill probably end up with that, esp since the comfort package is pretty much a standard on the 90TSI now.

                              Thanks for everyones input again.
