  • Right Pipe stuck closed

Hi, I got the R back from the Panel Beaters finally during the week. First thing I noticed
was the prrrp chrrrrp fart (lol) sound had dissapeared from the DSG gear changes! Got home and saw that only one pipe (left) was emitting the usual gunk on the tail pipe..

Obviously the Bi-modal vacume on the right pipe is not operating at all and stuck closed Ive had a look under the car, tinkered around everything looks connected.. Can only put it down to the panel beater who put it all back together has not hooked it up properly. The vacume hose goes along the back up into the rear left bumper.. somewhere..

Any ideas on what else to check? Im dropping it into VW anyway on Monday for them to go over the car after the accident.. Rather let them fix it than the panel beater give it a go hey.. I miss the gear change sound!

Try disconnecting a pin connected to the flap actuator and then turn the lever to open to keep the flap permanently open.

See if you still get the glorious fart.

Alternatively you can use a cable tie to kink the hose which apparently keeps the flap open all the time.

For full details look under the Golf R flapper mod section.

Thanks for the info.. yeah its pretty hard shut and I had to use a fair bit of effort after removing the pin to get the flap to open.. I might give it another try tomorrow.. not sure if by default it is open or closed.. will check the flapper mod thing out.

No worries mate. This forum is all about sharing the love!

Yes it was pretty tough to get the pin out. FYI the pin will still "move" as the actuator is still working. Mine magically managed to close the flap by pushing against the lever during my test run.

My R has the flap opened when ignition is off. Use a torch to shine down the right tailpipe to check if it's opened or closed.

Sounds as though you may have to get the repairer to take another look....

Yeah noticed mines closed with the ignition off. Dropped it into VW today to let the expert mechs check it out, not the local panel beater Really miss the fart gear changes

Being a 1st time VW owner, does the Mk6 GTI's have something similar? Reason is, my LHS tail pipe has noticably more soot build up, compared to the RHS.

She still burbles/farts nicely on over-run but maybe a rat has run up there and blocked the RHS outlet!?!?

You just need to drive it harder.

After this weekend (dyno then a whole day of hard driving) I have much more balance than I did before.

No it doesn't. The guys here are talking about a specific exhaust flap in the R (was also present on the R32).
This doesn't mean that there is a difference in "resistence" in the GTI exhaust which causes air to more readily favour one pipe over the other under low to mid acceleration...

Performed my exhaust flapper mod this evening on my new R. I followed the rubber tube to behind the passenger rear wheel where there is a small pump of some kind (also has other things hooked up to it). So i disabled it there and blocked it off. Haven't driven the car yet but i will report back if required on any differences in noise.

I noticed that if you simply remove the pin on the actuator that it (the pin) will still move back and forth as the car is being driven depending on throttle input....this movement could cause the pin to hit the actuator and close the flapper and it will stay closed. So i thought the more efficient and secure option was to leave the pin installed in the actuator (in the open position of course) and disable the vacuum line which caused the flapper to open/close.

Also, note that the flapper moves quite freely if you simply disconnect the actuator pin from the exhaust pipe.....which while accelerating, braking and hitting bumps in the road could cause the flapper to open/close on the fly.

I was under the impression that the pipe you have to clamp is near the tailpipes as per the below pictures, not behind the rear passenger wheel.

That rear muffler is just asking for a full removal, and a piece of Y shaped tubing put in it's place!! That would sound awesome!!

lol... considering the fact that the car is bordering on illegal even WITH that rear muffler... you'd have to be a brave person to do that....

you'd also need to either be already deaf, or not care about your hearing...

Yes that is the correct tube/pipe. But if you follow it you will see it goes to behind the passenger rear wheel. So I chose to block it off there where it is less visible/obvious to the VW dealership or Police.
