Yup, depreciation is heart breaking. Both times I've mentioned the SSV as a tradein (Octavia RS/MX-5) the sales guys have all but flat out said I should prepare to be reamed or sell it privately. I reckin since october last year I've lost $20k on it via a trade

Saw off a VT Gen 111 SS today in my White R DSG Stage 1 APR. The driver of the Commodore then proved why you should NOT buy one, fruitlessly trying to prove to all that he would not be beaten!! Just made a complete goose of himself, further cementing the relationship between bogan and Commodore, sadly, as they are a good value performance car.

If you want to noticed by all, including law enforcement, by the Commodore.
If you want to look forward to getting in the car in the morning, listening to the Brmp as it changes up, by a Golf R

I really don't want to be that guy who comes to VW forum and preaches another marque. But comparing a sexy tuned Golf R to a probably flogged and clapped out 10+ year old commodore probably with a dumb 4sp auto 'box is hardly a fair comparison :p
Your golf probably makes more power at all wheels than his did at the engine by this point! hehe.

The guy obviously had no idea though... Imo the Bogan Factor transition point for Commodores is the VZ/VY area... VE's are still a little too expensive for most of that ilk

            Bunch of absolute rorter's.

The worst experience I have had buying ANY product, ever.
Same here. I also had a very bad experience with Denlo.

Chatswood Classic, Phil McGrath and Bill Buckle were all good.

Berwick VW were excellent, so was the dealer in Canberra who is on here.

I dont know if anyone has offered this as a suggestion as of yet, and i understand you've already chosen the R (though my quick skim over this thread), but have you considered a Renault Megane rs250?
Great performing cars! 184kw coupled with a beautiful chassis, LSD and some great Brembo brakes.....all equating to real driving performance!
Fuel consumption at around 9l/100 combined and retailing at cheaper than both cars, it's a very feasible option that I believe shouldn't be brushed off too quickly. Another plus is the fact it comes in a nice variety of colours. Whilst I personally am in-love with the R and wish i could afford one, I feel they are very limited in their colour range and this is where the Yellows, Blues and Reds available on the megane really stand out and give the car that extra presence and uniqueness.
              Just food for thought really.

The cabin quality is absolute BS in comparison to a Golf GTI. Cheap plastics everywhere. I love the factory fitted Miltek exhaust option though...sounds totally sick!!!

+1. You cant compare a 10 year old **** box to a new SS. They push 60K on road. And have 270KWs - stock.

I reckon a Stock SS vs a Stg 1(2 even) R would be close on the quarter. Very close.

Yeah they look a little loud, but not everyone on the road is a librarian, or accountant, and therefore calculated the costs of running their vehicle before making the irrational decision of not buying a Camry.

Not having a go mate, but the whole "bogan" thing for people who drive Fords and Holdens is a bit rich. The cars cost a packet and go well.

What a new SS-V optioned on road? Not much less than a R I imagine.

I'd rather a current SS or XR6 turbo than an old BMW or MERC and pretend like im driving around the marque - when in fact its an old ****box.

You do realise a number of those are part of the Inchcape group which is the group umbrella for Denlo.. the Sales reps move around.. I ranch Cahtswood classic to find my original sales rep there that had moved over from Denlo Parramatta. So rather than a cutlure issue at a dealership I would suggest it is more of the experience you get with a particular sales rep. and it appears it is a mixed bag where ever you go.

Yeah the RS 250 has been discussed on this forum at length and it up there with a consideration, however the general feedback is concerns about the depreciation and it quirky looks. Not my cup of tea and I am not a big fan of FWD but if you are out comparing performance it is in the mix

Exactly right SilvrFoxX. It highlights why we don't have any "Recommended dealership threads" in this forum. Instead we have "Recommended Salesmen threads". Here is the one for Sydney.

I'm also in the situation where my salesman is no longer at Denlo but at Chatswood. People move around all the time.

Anyway... back on topic, whatever that is...

Nah they're pretty close these days and well optioned as well. I mean one of my XR6T's after options (Wheels, brakes etc) was mid 50's so they're not cheap.

I considered an SS but I'm done with aussie cars and their rubbish dealership support (from experience). But as Rexman said, if I had to choose between a brand new SS or equiv money old euro and needed a decent size sedan, I'd take the SS every time. Cracks me up when you see wankers in old euros thinking they're high roller bigwigs cos of a badge.

Speaking of V8 and wanting one....spent the morning in an AMG SL55, the fuel consumption is absolutely mind boggling. Sub 20L/100 is "economical" but you just wouldn't care!

                            I have a VE SS, a Golf R & a TRD Aurion.
Comparing the VE SS & Golf R i think i would always pick the R.
The SS is obviously a much larger car but it feels alot less special to drive... The R's arent the most amazing cars to look at/drive but everytime i drive my R i feel like i made a good choice and am happy with every aspect where as the commodore is just like driving any other family car with more power and i find myself finding flaws with it after owning the VW for a while now.
The R with a Stage 1 tune feels like a quicker car on the road and uses its power alot more effectively
I have compared 0-100 using a G-tech and can get around 5 seconds flat for the R and 5.3 for the SS
The SS is fun to drive on occasion but after driving the R you can feel the size.. one thing thats highlighted is the poor braking compared to the R sometimes it feels like you have to put your foot through the floor
If your after space chose the commodore but personally i'd pick the R everytime as the pro's outweigh the cons.
Holdens have much worse resale, sometimes floaty handling, poor brakes, noisy cabin, uncomfortable seats (Personal opinion) and i've had a few small issues (all fixed by warranty).

Surprisingly i probably get better economy out of the SS than the R (maybe as i only drive the R on rarer "Spirited" occasions

My 'bogan' comment was only aimed at the older models where you can get a V8 for about $12k or so. They do unavoidably attract a certain crowd...

My SS-V Redline in Manual with metallic paint was about $52,000 drive away. I'm not 100% sure but R's are about $55k?
