    Guys,

Thank you for your opinions and experiences, you have been really helpful.

After a lot of research, thought and soul searching I've decided that a Golf is my best fit (assuming the test drive gos well, which I'm sure it will. It just makes more sense for me living in inner sydney that the VW will be much easier to live with. That and te wife will be much more comfortable not driving something as big as a commodore etc.

Also the convenience of the DSG, easier to park around my area, and the sleeper factor.

It should be about 1 month away until I have the cash ready to go, can't wait!

    Thanks again!

Well... given that if you want to order the car with your specifications, you may be waiting for 6 months for it to arrive, get down to the dealership now!

I came from an XR6T, Fab came from an SS as did Bezzy and haven't heard any regrets!
Having a V8 is a bucket list thing, you gotta have at least one at some point!

Given you've already made the decision, I've test driven the SSV when I was looking to replace the WRX with a GT Liberty (last body shell, thankyou)...
The SSV has great grip but you'll pay through the nose for tyres if you use the grip; heavy car with soft, large tyres.
Cushy, comfortable ride (hardly performance oriented), even more so than the R.
Great throttle response, no turbo lag was very refreshing.
            Nice sound, but too quiet.
Suprisingly nice transmission; clutch / gearbox feel.
            No software nanny interference.
Rear drive (combined with no lag).
The one I drove was bright green with black stripes...did I feel obvious?

My wife wouldn't agree to owning one even if I'd decided on it, which I didn't. Running costs: tyres, fuel every play time discourage me from the interest.
We kept the WRX and got a Tiguan.
I'm still biding my time for an R.

I arrived at the GTI after a succession of modified V8s and currently babysitting my dad's VE 6.0 Calais, the only thing I really still miss is the V8 soundtrack, I don't miss the 20 - 24l/100km fuel consumption.

Unless you are modifying the SSV, in standard form I doubt you would regret an R.

Go to Chatswood Classic or Denlo. If my memory serves me correctly Inchape has some kind of customer service checklist on the salespeople's desk that actually reminds them to offer the customer a test drive.

Bloody effective too, I was stupid enough to wander in there "just for a look", couldn't say no to offer of a test drive, couldn't wipe the grin off my face during the test drive....$old!

we've got an SS-V Sportwagon. I love it... but we have it for fitting kids in and towing a boat. If we didn't have those requirements, I reckon I'd swap it for an R in a heartbeat.

The good thing is, either way (and I know you've already made up your mind), you're going to have fun!

                      Enjoy!

                                Whoa, 7-10 months...

Km test driving the R & GTI this morning, will be interesting to see if I think the wait is worth it!
