I had the same issue on the MKV GTI.

Turned out to be a massive bubble on the inside sidewall of the left rear tyre.

Had all 4 replaced and the noise went away. Did not do the wheel alignment at the time.

I would describe that as feathering. Sawtooth is like feathering on steroids. One can lead to the other, depending on the tread pattern.

My wheel alignment is OK and tracking and tyre wear is good, and the wheels are standard. Thanks for the info guys. I am now persuaded that it is the feathered tyres and won't be fixed until I replace them. Any suggestions for replacement tyre brands? You may be wasting your money on a wheel alignment Ozram. If you can put some other wheels/tyres on and see if the noise goes away. My dealer said he did that with mine and the noise went, but I was not sure I believed him. Maybe it was the truth!!!!

It is the Bridgies. On our previous SP23 (well known for road noise) we changed to Pirelli P7 and it transformed the car. Big block tread patterns are nice for handling not so nice for noise.

This might be a bit of a trek for you, it is a trek for me also, but the best guy in Sydney (massive call) is Heasmans in Alexandria/Sydenham. Bit further down towards the city, from that wheel place Tempe Tyres. (opposite side of the road.)

They do all the big brand luxury cars, up to rally cars. Not cheap. But their worth it.

I had the same problem!! Yesterday i had my car fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 3 - which ended up being a massive improvement over the Bridgestone tyres i had previously...now the annoying noise is gone! Its great!

I had a very similar problem on a previous car (Honda Euro not VW) - the Yokohamas started whirring like I had off-road tyres at around 30,000. The tyre place I went to just suggested it was feathering and that more constant wheel alignments would have stopped it. (I guess they would say that??) The tyres still had 3-4mm of tread left when I hit 60,000 but I could not stand the noise and people would turn to see what it was when I came down the street near home.

Replaced the Yokohamas with Pirelli and the noise went away.

The Conti Sport Contact 2's on our new wagon are suprisingly noisy - I had better get used to it I guess ......

They do corner very well though !

Similar story with my previous Focus and its OEM NCTs, especially after they rotated the tyres during a service. I replaced them with some Kumhos and wished I'd done it when the car was new.

Hi veedubbers

I think I may have been driving my 6 month old gti with tyres/wheels fitted on the wrong sides. Left wheels should be on the right and right wheels should be on the left.
Can anyone confirm whether the stock bridgestone potenzas have directional threads? And if so would I be correct in saying that if the rotation indicator on the tyre is facing the rear of the car when it is sitting at the 12' oclock position, then my tyres/wheels have been fitted incorrectly?
