    Hey TDiJetta, yes and yes.
The preston loop is kind of our 'test circuit'
Wippells were pretty good with both service and price with this car. They did stiff me an ipod cable for the MDI, so watch them still

Nice, I haven't been out to Preston in a while. It's not a bad road. We bought our 2 cars from Wips but not again. I'll have to keep an eye out for your GTI.

Quite the opposite actually =) I had trouble keeping up with them as I was trying to keep my revs below 3,500rpm!!!

In the end, due to an itchy right foot, my 300kms car's is no longer a 3,500rpm virgin....sigh....

The manual 135i had trouble keeping up with the DSG. It was faster in the first two gears, but lost out at higher ones.

I must say the 135's exhaust is really mean though!!!!! Also noticed that the A5 2.0T has factory stock turbo timer when the engine is turned off. Does the R have this? I only hear the hissing sound on the R......

I knew the 135i would be the biggest threat, i've driven a few of them now and they are seriously quick cars.

The R has no turbo timer although i know what you mean about the hissing sound, first time i heard it i thought i had a puncture.

              • The GTI and R won't keep the engine running, but it does keep the oil system running so that the turbo don't die...

                  • Yeah, it's mentioned in the owners manual
It also mentions that if you've been thrasing it, to drive regularly for a few mins, or idle for a few mins, before turning it off (cause it's more than the turbo you need to look after ). But with regular driving, you're right to just turn it off as soon as you pull up

I'm not sure how this is legal. AFAIK, ADRs state that the engine cannot be running when the key is removed - which is precisely what a turbo timer does. (Remote start is - or at least was - illegal for the same reason.)

Are you sure the engine is actually running? Perhaps just a series of very loud pumps that are cooling the turbo?

Perhaps they were just fans running, but were LOUD!

yes and to assist heat dispersing from the engine, raise the hood for an hour or two after a hard drive....

Yeah. You may find the R will crank the fans after you turn the engine off on a hot day. Here in SA I've had that happen a handful of times after driving in 30+ degree heat, and it is very loud.

+1. But there really is no substitute for letting the engine idle for 2-5 minutes if you've been driving hard within the last, say, 5 minutes. The turbo and other components need to cool down slowly and in a controlled fashion; switching off right away can cause temperatures to fall off quickly, leading to rapid contraction of turbo housings, warping and cracking of various critical parts, etc. So you need to be as concerned about rapid cooling as you do about retained heat.

It's nice that our VWs have protection mechanisms built in to prevent serious damage, but I still remember the lurid labels on doors of 80s turbo cars warning of critical turbo failure if you don't do controlled cooling, and so give my car the benefit of the doubt.
