Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Ok guys I managed to install the complete interior LED kit from TunerDomes. Happy to say I didn't break anything! Here's some untouched photos of the finished product in total darkness. They are bright! The photos are pretty close to the real look.

    • Are the footwell lights dimmable via the MFD convenience menu? Many LEDs can't be dimmed, and they're way to bright to drive around with them on, so just wondering

      • I was thinking the same thing last night mate, although it was late and I really was desperate for sleep. I'll check this out tonight and report back! I hope they are lol, otherwise might just get a set of footwells in the red colour option (the footwell/glovebox lights were a royal pain to replace, probably more so than the front map lights were, anyone who has done it/going to do it will know what I mean..).

        • Hi Guys. Quick easy question for the crowd. Going to upgrade to the Detroit 18s (unless someone has a better suggestion?). Is there anyone we like in Sydney North to do the business with? All wisdom much appreciated.

            • I bought one of these for my 118TSI:
              VW Golf 5 & 6 GTi/Scirocco DSG multi-function Steering wheel

Identical to my steering wheel (no GTI badge, etc) besides the sporty flat bottom, silver trim behind the MDI controls, and the paddle shifters.
Only cost me ~$650AUD (currently on special) and I plan on selling the extra airbag for at least $250. So much for a ~$2000 pipe-dream upgrade.

              • Wow. I would love to have flappy paddles behind the wheel for my future 147 Jetta! Will the paddles work on any VW with DSG?

Are you gonna try to install it yourself?

                • I'll play it safe and get a friend who works on VW's to give us a hand, and then it's just a number that needs changing in VCDS to enable the paddles.

Most wheel's should suit most cars if they're built around the same time/same model/MK. But always better to check explicitly.

                  • Rather than get nasty footwell LED's I did my usual trick of painting the covers in a red waterbased paint and setting output to 80% in the MFD. Matches the rest of the red mood lighting now.

Straightened up the rear plate and getting covers today

Added OEM "R Line" badges to seat adjustment inserts and OEM R badge to engine cover.

                    Enough bling.

Dealer in Germany. The company I work for has Sales and R&D ops throughout Europe so quite useful getting bits sent over.

                          • Scratched up the brush metal insert drivers side door panel. Very small mark but pissed off, wonder if Dealer can replace it without asking for a leg

                            • That looks great! Did it take long?! So was it a direct swap or you had to deal with swapping the airbags etc as well?

                              DSG workin well??

                              • You have to remove the airbag to remove the wheel, so I've kept the airbags with their respective wheels (so I have the airbag that came with that new wheel).

Removing the clips is a pain, (hard to see, hard to get to, requires a fair bit of strength to remove the clips). I would defo recommend making this a 2-person job. Because the clips on my wheel were different to what we were familiar with, that took us quite a while. Once we knew which way to push the clip, however, it turned out to be a much easier system than the other one. I think by the time we finished 2 hours passed, but it shouldn't really take more than 20 minutes if you know what you're doing.

                                DSG is working great.
