Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I'm in the same spot as you guys. If my R was a weekend/trackday warrior I'd have got them. As for the RS4 etc, if I could afford one of them, I'd probaly have a GTI as daily so the comfort factor wouldn't be an issue

    • I read somewhere that the GTI/R's standard seats are made by Recaro as well?

"She" found the satnav volume too low. I know you have to adjust the volume while the satnav is making an announcement, but it's a bit fiddly. Also shows how hard it must be to review cars when they are so complicated and have so many features. "She" is also not a fan of the cupholder.

          • Yeah - who knows whether the press machine had the bottle opener in there or not to support the cup...
But it's pretty good when the only real complaint is that the reviewer just didn't bother to look at the manual and see adjusting the Nav volume is as simple as just turning up the volume (via the regular volume knob) whilst the Nav is talking! (and judging by cme2c's comment above about it being "fiddly", I take it he doesn't know this either! hehe)

Yeah nothing to worry about, maybe they should RTFM before making comments like that other reviewer who didn't know the steering wheel was adjustable.

              That's a good $9,500 question..

Why should reviewers RTFM.... real owners don't bother

That's true lol. Although some people take their reviews as being very factual.

Those He/She articles are so crap IMO

I've tested the car twice and didn't even notice it having cupholders hehe, I suspect the manual will be even more distant in my mind!

                    • my GTI's cup holder now pretty much become a new home for my Maui Jim sunnies...
the overhead compartment is freakin' way too small for pretty much any modern sunnies...

Hardly a useful review when both reviewers were clueless.

Like 'HE' saying that ACC should be standard and would help differentiate it between the GTI, did 'HE' miss the bigger turbo, bigger wheels, Bi-Xenons and AWD to name a few?

And of course 'SHE' being unable to use the cupholder or adjust the sat nav volume which even the slowest of people would be able to figure out. Even went as far as to say it would stop her from buying the car.

BTW 'SHE' didn't favour the R but was torn between the GTI and the R. 'HE' merely said the R has more power and better traction which is stating the obvious with a preference for the looks of the R.

You're forgetting that too many reviewers (I don't want to say all) take all car buyers as idiots who would, in this case, think that because the engines are the same size (2.0L) with the same number of cylinders that they're obviously identical. Plus you can't see AWD (and there's no AWD badge on the boot) and no one notices tyres anyway, they're just round black things.

Of course the reviewers, especially in this instance, haven't taken into account that 99% of R buyers don't fall into the above category and actually have enough brains to know at least the basic differences between the R and GTI.
