Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Well Guy_H, you've actually had a solution since not long after the Golf GTI came out. Then in February you guys came up with another new solution which is this time less than half the cost!

So now you just need a bunch of these guys to start paying for your time to develop an even lower cost solution which just fixes the problem and doesn't turn the car into a high-performance weapon! hehe

    • I haven't paid too much attention to this thread as it hasn't really effected me with having the R but have noticed a rattling noise at low revs when accelerating in our Tiguan, any chance it could be the same issues as with the GTI? Do they use the same parts?

        • I test drove a MY11 GTI the other day and I was told I was the first person to test drive it. It had under 50km on the clock. I didn't notice any rattles coming from the front but there were some rattles coming from the back underneath - might be the exhaust vibrating. I think it was mentioned somewhere here. Is it common and has it been esaily fixed? It was noticeable when I slowed down and started accelerating at around 2000-2500rpm. Also, the car didn't have rego on it and I was told it just came in the day before so had to hang a temporary number plate for a test drive. I was told it's not a demo but I was wondering if test drives are allowed with a temporary number plate like that shouldn't it have to be a demo? or maybe it was in that process and I happened to test drive it?

my brand new 2011 gti has this too - rattle from the back when accelarating, around 2000-3000 rpm, to me it sounds like its coming from the back middle - i thought it was the exhauts too

not really bothered by it though, I'm either driving economically or gunning it, so rarely between 2-3K rpms

A friend bought a "new" 07 Golf TDI that was unregistered but had 400km on it. Although she had test driven it she didn't notice it until she was on her way home with it and so she went back and confronted the salesman and dealer principal who were most apologetic and adjusted the deal accordingly.

A demonstrator car is just a name, it can be registered or unregistered. But if the car (demo or not) is unregistered, it needs to have the dealer/temporary plate put on the car so that if anything happens, then the car can be tracked back and driver gouged...I mean appropriately fined.

As for the rattle (to keep this post on topic), I'm used to it now but it's still a little annoying.

                    • Wow. That was an intense read....

Just out of curiosity, does the R suffer from this?
I gather that the MkV has the same issue, but as stated, the different exhaust 'masks' it.
With the R having a freer flowing exhaust, wouldn't it make an appearance on it as well?

Hope its not overly intrusive when I finally get my order.

So there may be a small chance of buying a brand new car in stock that had been test driven by several customers? Is there a certain limit on km where a car has to be transferred to a demo? I asked this dealer several times if it's not a demo as I was allowed to test drive it and probably more people have after me and I kept being told it's a brand new car as it was unregistered. I don't know much about cars but even if I had the car for a year and had to lend it to my best friend for a while I would worry as driving styles might differ. So what about the so-called brand new car that was test driven by several customers. That's one of the main reasons I am not even looking at demos. I saw somewhere on this forum under certain km on the clock dealers are allowed to set it back to 0km? Sorry for going off topic.

It's difficult to answer completely as I'm not a dealer so I don't know all that is allowed or not. But from the experiences I've had, most dealers don't allow anyone to drive a car that isn't set aside for demo purposes but some do, though normally only around the block (i.e. very few kms). Even a brand new car has a few kms on the odometer as it gets driven to a few spots (e.g. onto a boat) and for window tinting, etc. I would probably follow up on that if you were going to be buying a car sitting on the showroom floor of that dealer.

I won't mention anything to bring this back on topic other than if another post is required, that it should go in its own topic.

                            • I have the rattle too. My11.5 gti adidas, dsg. Sounds like a charity tin full of coins rattling behind the stereo between 2k-3k rpm. Started happening about 1800 kms. Not happy.

don't think so. it mostly happens on the newer EA888 (tsi) engines seen in the gti mk6.
both the golf r & gti mk5 use the older EA113 (tfsi) engine. those engines don't have the wastegate as part (one-piece) of the turbo manifold. hence no 'wastegate' rattle.
