Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Who is your dealer? Dealers like these should be praised publicly.

    • I recently had my car repaired following an accident. The loud rattled at 2500rev had completely resolved. It finally sound like it supposed to .

      • After 22,00o km, mine still rattles and it was checked out by the dealer at the 15,000km, the rattle was acknowledged and I was told it was 'normal'.

depending on where and how I drive it sometimes I hear it, sometimes I don't. while it doesn't detract from the car, I still think its a characteristic that is out of character with the 'quality' of the car.

          • A bigger turbo fixes it apparently .

            Comment

            • Yeah - but a bigger turbo also requires so many other things to pass the engineering that the amount you spent could've got you a new Polo...

How much could a Forge K03 wastegate actuator actually cost? A few hundred?

              Edit:
              Used one for US$120
              New one for US$170

I guess they must be about US$200 from Forge distributors...

              • Pity we lost a few post last month.

I talked to the guys from Forge and they said you can't change the wastegate acuator on the MK6 golf because its permanently rivited to the turbo.

That should not affect the R though. It has the older engine.

Bummer.... so you'd have to change the entire K03 turbo. Then the next problem is that the turbocharger and exhaust manifold are the one item...

Yes, but this is a GTI specific thread for a GTI specific problem...

                    • That and that fact that you just upgraded your turbo so the other parts you will have to upgrade ... list goes on and on. Extremely frustrating.

If it was all subjective then why did you want to ditch your GTI three weeks into ownership and admitting to me that you wanted to get the R?

The MKV provides more driver feedback than the MKVI GTI which = more fun, there is nothing subjective about that. It either is or isn't.
no, it doesn't. the mkvi has more precise steering with better feedback, a nicer rear end thanks to the stiffer sway and is much sweeter and easier to manage in a corner. in a mkv you really had to make sure you cleaned the car up before you went into a corner and once you'd turned in your options for adjustment were pretty much the brakes. this is much less the case with a mkvi. the ea888 is also a better engine than the 113, it's much more happy to rev and doesn't feel as 'short' as the 113 when you're going for it.

i drove a mkv gti for 3 years and it was a fantastic car but while it was nimble the new one is a damn ballerina. yes there's more sound deadening and i think the mkv exhaust had a nicer note but when it comes to input, feedback and driveability the mkvi is better than the mkv. not by a lot but enough to notice. and of course that's before we start talking about the interior. i've driven both cars over the same roads, wet and dry, and formed my own opinion.

as far as the r goes. i'd rather wait for a model with xds as i felt the r understeered more and more often than the mkvi gti. doesn't mean it's a worse car, it just means that's how it is and that i reckon xds would make it almost unbeatable as you'd effectively have torque vectoring, awd and +-200kw. this is based only off test drives so for all i know this is something that r owners know how to drive around. if the r did come with xds i think you'd see some serious daylight between r vs gti lap times.

                        • I've got the rattle too...

                          Hi all,

Just thought I'd contribute to the thread, I took delivery of my 2011 DSG GTI on the 14th (I freakin love it!) and I have the rattle too, meaning that VW obviously have not resolved the issue, if they are actually conceding that it is an issue.

I noticed the rattle day 1 of driving the car, and to be honest do find it slightly annoying and to agree with some of the others contributing to this thread, a little cheap sounding. In my car however, it is very slight, and by slight I mean that everyone I have had in the car so far cannot hear the rattle at all, which I can't comprehend as even as slight as it is, I can hear it clearly, at the exact rev range previously discussed.

I haven't decided whether to lodge a formal complaint with my dealer. I'm thinking I should to at least give more weight to the overall issue, and also if a fix is released my dealer knows that I have recognised the problem in my vehicle.

I'm planning to get an APR exhaust soon, among other things so I will see if the "rattle" is diminished. Also I would be keen to catch up with anyone else in the Perth area to see if the rattle is the same or somewhat less in the 11.

wow, that sucks. I was hoping what I read about the issue being fixed in MY11 models was true. Mine will be a 2011 build, but now I'll be expecting the rattle and if I hear it I'll be bringing it up at delivery.

I still haven't seen a video demonstrating the rattle, only a vid from a Diesel Golf, if it's anything like that I'll leave the car at the dealership.

                            • I noticed the rattle when i had a demo car for the weekend back in March (MY10 Model) and it was bloody annoying. After clicking over 1000 k's in my new My11 I have to say the rattle isnt as bad. There is a rattle (sometimes), but its not as annoying as I remember it in the My10 I had for the weekend.

Anyway...I dont really care if it has a slight rattle. The number of things I love about the car outweigh this one thing.

I met up with MIRSAD early last year to compare rattles in our GTIs - they were pretty much identical. I then discussed the issue with Quattro Motors in Burswood, who put me in contact with a guy that had fitted the APR turbo back exhaust and the Carbonio CAI. We met up and I took his car for a drive. It's true, I couldn't hear the rattle in his car, but the exhaust is LOUD compared to stock, and the CAI aspiration may have disguised it further. His GTI is no longer understated - it's a beast that will get attention from all directions when you push the accelerator. The DSG "fart" is now more of an explosion that rattles window frames as you drive through suburbia. Pretty wild, and definitely not my cup of tea.

If you want to meet up, just PM me and I'm sure we could go for a spin.
