Golf R Observations and Questions

I had to wait quite a few months after selling my old Cooper S before my S3 arrived. Although, I guess the pain was dulled to an extent by having access to my wife's GTI, haha. That said, the wait will test your patience, but, ultimately, it will be worth it!

Well the wait for the R will very soon become even more difficult.
Within 1 week of advertising my WRX for sale, today it was sold. The guy will be picking it up mid week and then i will be 'turbo car less' till the R arrives.

I had to hand back my leased XR6T a couple weeks ago, I didn't even like the stupid fraud but still feel like a dirty hippy not owning a car. The wait is unbareable, should just take long service leave and hibernate until it arrives!

Congrats on the sale mate, I'm about to advertise my 6 MPS, though if I do sell mine early my car allowance will cover a low cost hire car and I at least get the Wife's Jetta to have burn in (occasionally)

Thankfully my brother-in-law has just told me i can use his bunky VN Commodore to get around in, rwd and superior handling right there.

When did you order it? Next shipment isn't till December?

Next R build weeks are ~37 to 39 (Sep 13 to Oct 3) as far as I can tell. This means cars won't dock locally until ~42 to 44 (Oct 18 to Nov 7), and won't be available for customer delivery until ~45 to 47 (Nov 8 to 28 ).

Anyone that purchased the car on the day it came out at my dealership at least was given a Nov 30th delivery estimate. So this works well with the information we have.

When did you order it? Next shipment isn't till December?

Proper order got entered into the system on 26/05 according to NADCON screenshot with a buildability check on 17/06. No other info.

Where does that info come from? If my car doesn't go into build for another 2 months then @#$#.... The RS3 will be out before this thing turns up!

It comes from people who've been told their build dates. I thought it was only week 38, but at least one person here has said theirs is week 37. So I've just generalised for week 38 and the week before and after.

Sounds like a long wait and the people that ordered a few months ago may not get theirs any quicker than people who ordered in July.

So what's the deal with changing specs in the system? Is there a certain period that you can change the spec without getting a new production slot?

I did ask if I could change the spec last week, 1 week after signing the OTP, & was advised if I did it would delay delivery till Jan?Feb 2011. Needless to say I decided to stick with the original spec. But saying that I would therefore assume the dealership could give me a VIN or is that only created after/during build??

I've been told that I should have more information available after August 10th when firm dates become available. FYI mine was Week 37 production, ordered 16 June with 30 Nov quoted for delivery

Is the R built on the same production line as other Golfs?

If so I'd be surprised if build weeks were allocted by model of car. It's (generally) just not the way modern production lines with just-in-time manufacturing work.

I've not toured the factory at Wolfsburg, so perhaps it is different, but with MINI (much less volume admittedly) at any point on the Oxford line they could have a LDH Cooper, followed by a RHD Cooper S convertible, then a RHD Cooper S hardtop and so on. There is no order to the way the models are built. It's pretty cool to see actually.

Mine is the same week build as Shakespeare's, week 37, also with the same estimated delivery date.

As for the VIN number, i have been told that you won't receive that until the car is physically built and has left the assembly line.
