Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I think it's easier to just goto a specialist independent who actually has some respect for your car and business.

Polo also picks up carsguide.com.au ‘Green Car of the Year’ title.

With aftermarket suspension upgrades on the old MKV GTI, I encouraged my service managers to take out the GTI for a drive on an extended route travelling on varied roadways to experience the change in chassis tune and the variation in low-speed and high-speed compression and rebound damping.

I’m told that when all the mechanics at my local dealer see the adjustable coilover suspension – they’re all vying for a drive. In the past, only allowed two service managers and head mechanic and second in charge mechanic drive the old modified GTI.

On delivery of the MK6 GTI six months ago, the head mechanic at my local dealer was one of 20 Volkswagen mechanics to have completed every course that Volkswagen technical run. He is one of the few mechanics in Australia that has the ability to rebuild DSG gearboxes and has rebuilt the DSG for that dealership and other dealers several times over.

Any dramas with my GTI, I know my local dealer is practically a one stop shop. It’s also good for my service guys to gain an appreciation of the pit-falls of the modifying a Golf – issues like spring bind, tug’n’release, incorrect ride height and/or wheel offset - as well as experiencing quality TUV approved aftermarket gear that won't void my warranty in most repsects. Service managers and head mechanics are in a better position to assist others that come into the dealership with similar issues imo.

      Cheers
      WJ

      • No issues there if you've given them permission and encouraged it but the original comment sounded like they were having a "go" of anything modified that came in!

            • EDL/XDS -v- AWD: In the snow

Great video ad I came across that highlights all I been saying about electronic differential lock (EDL) for slow speeds & extended differential lock (XDL) for higher speeds on the FWD Golf GTI and Polo GTI.

YouTube - 2011 Volkswagen Polo GTI

EDL/XDS - although not a proper LSD - does have advantages in that it saves weight & can be used proactively based on computers and mathematical calculations. The Ferrari 458 Italia uses an E-diff, to my understanding, it's like a sideways Haldex system on the rear diff with computer & hydraulics controlling the oil forced against the clutches to control drive to each rear wheel, optimising traction out of corners. The new Maclaren Supercar MP4-12C has forgone an E-diff arrangement that Ferrari use - instead opting for an EDL/XDS setup to save weight (no hydraulics or clutchpacks to add weight).

              Cheers

              • So how does that relate to comparisons between the GTI and the R..?

The relevance is the vid of a Polo... oh wait.

See if I can find a video of a GTI on snow with XDS - shouldn't be too much different from the Polo GTI given both are FWD with EDL/XDS.

                          LOL, so GTI = MP4-12C?

                              • Track Attack: Golf R -v- STI -v- Focus RS

Some of the Golf R guys are complaining I've been giving the Polo GTI too much attention. Here's a local review from drive.com.au of the Golf R against the hero hatches:

White heat: Focus RS v WRX STI v Golf R

                                Volkswagen Golf R review | hot-hatches

If the Golf R ain't hard enough when compared against a Focus RS or STI ... Nothing a set of aftermarket coilovers and aftermarket adjustable sway bars wouldn't fix.

                                Cheers
