Frankly I take advice from any dealer with a grain of salt
They have often failed to find basic features on the R that they should know about
Having said that, my R will run on factory oil and get serviced per VW manual, every 15k.
I have also been told by Pulse Racing who tuned my XT (the first 06 done by Paul) that factory oil should be left in the engine until recommended change.
I never track the cars, I don't drive them beyond 2/3rds and I maintain them well.
I have 6 years warranty.
Never had any issues at all re. oil being changed at manufacturers recommended interval on the dozens of both private and company vehicles I have owned.8VSS2L/16 E9E9 XG MP SPP1 4ZD 6XK CSC5P with an extra free 10kW

However, logic would suggest that the first-fill is a synthetic oil, since it's anticipated that it would not be drained until the first service, which occurs at 15 000 km or 1 year. Break-in oils are usually drained well before that sort of mileage and duration.
Also, Castrol make a big song & dance about how their 504/507 oils (which are synthetic) are used as first-fill at Volkswagen.

Who wants to pay for me to take a trip to Wolfsburg?
I'll ask them, on the factory floor.....and get pics as evidence.

"official" answer given by VW America....
"Reference # 811003016
Dear Sir:
Thank you for contacting Volkswagen. I understand you want to know what type of engine oil was factory filled in your 2011 GTI, if a “break-in” additive was used, and when Volkswagen recommends having the first oil change performed. I appreciate the opportunity to respond.
Your GTI’s engine was factory filled with synthetic oil, which met Volkswagen’s oil quality standards and had a viscosity grade of SAE 5W-40. This information can be found on page 249 of your Owner’s Manual. I regret I do not have information regarding what brand this oil was used to fill your GTI.
Because of the advances in technology, and the benefits of using synthetic oil, break-in additives were not used for your GTI. For this reason Volkswagen recommends having the first oil change performed at one year, or 10,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
....
Sincerely,
Rebekah B.
