  • Re: What oil is delivered from the Factory for the new MK6 GTI

I was told by someone or have been reading somewhere that the new GTI MK6 which ordered new has no Fully Synthetic Oil but rather oil that is being put on by VW Factory..

Anyone here know what sort of oil that they use. I was also told by the VW Service people that after the 15000k they'll then flush out the oil and replace it with the Castrol 50W Fully Synthetic..

    Can anyone here confirm this?

    See WJ's post on 25-05-2010.

Secondly, as all the earlier articles on ‘tips for break-in of motor’ suggest, the MK6 GTI comes with mineral based oil for the first 15,000km before changing to synthetic oil. The mineral oil is far better for trapping those unwanted bits of metal during the bedding in process. The synthetic oil is far too slippery to be used from the outset. The mineral oil imo is easily distinguished from the synthetic in that it seems to look much cleaner than the darker synthetic oil. The dealer states that a mineral oil should be used for the first 15,000km prior to swapping over to synthetic oil for the remaining life of the TSI motor.
So yes - correct, they'll switch to synthetic oil at the 15,000km service

Can anyone provide a reference to back up the oft repeated claim that it is a mineral based oil used for the factory fill in the TSI motors? Something with a bit more authority than 'my mate who works at ... told me so' would be nice.

My gti has only done 2200km.. i rang the dealer and asked if they can change the oil for me.. and would this be an issue.. the guy said it is not recommended if you change the oil before 15000km, he also said if the oil is changed before this, the engine may consume more oil and or have start to have leaks which will not be covered under warranty. He Said we can change the oil if you want, but you will have to sign a disclaimer that if anything happens the warranty will be void.. He said once the oil is changed at 15000km, you may change the oil after that as many times as you wish..

So i was like.. ok leave it as it is.. even though i want to change it.. but as its a special VW oil i dont want to risk my warranty.. especially for the motor.. O_O

          Hi all,

quick question, if you were to need to top up the oil before the 15000km service, what would you use?

I was told that if this was to happen to me just take it back to the dealer and they'll top it up free of charge... (so in short - don't know, but VW service ppl will do it for you - they mentioned it was some special oil only available through VW, perhaps this 'mineral' oil...)

Oils tests performed overseas on new GTI's and TDI's show it to be a synthetic oil used.

You've been told bulls**t. Ring another dealer. I had a change performed at six months and ~7000kms with my dealer with no problems and the manual even recommends it under the driving conditions in Australia. (RTFM)

They top it up with whatever synthetic oil they use at the time.

My dealer gave me a litre of oil and told me to top it up as needs and after 15,000 when i get the service done ask the service guys to change the oil in the bottle to the oil they put in at the 15,000 service so i'm assuming its the special oil they gave me.

I just found this thread where I should have asked this specific question. Sorry. So mineral/synthetic oil or the clearer oil from factory can be topped up with whatever synthetic oil they use at service centre? So the factory oil doesn't need to be flushed first?

no problems getting a top-up from the dealer or using a 502.00/505 or 504.00/507 from the shops

Oils can be mixed from brand to brand without issue

btw my mechanic said it's better to use thicker oil for track days.. the W5-30 is too thin and tends to evaporate...

If you can get it in 502.00 - sure. Very sustainable & environmentally friendly.

                            oil doesn't evaporate as such.

What he probably means is that the EA888 engine tends to get a bit of blow-by & excessive PCV scavenging when the engine is working hard, which causes the oil level to drop.

Also, if you are running at high oil temps, a more viscous oil may provide a slightly more stable boundary layer for the bearings to run on.

I've googled and had a quick read and it looks like mineral oil is used in new engines as it has a lower lubricity etc and lets the piston rings to be seated firmly around the pistons due to higher friction. But then first service interval of 15,000km (or 7500km) seems a bit too long for an engine oil change if it were really mineral oil? So it may be synthetic just by looking at the recommended first service interval. It's confusing. Car didn't feel as smooth today when I tried to drive in a hurried fashion but not accelerating hard - it used to be smooth and thought to myself this car goes like how I intended. It's not like that now. I had to step on it then goes... goes fast. I'll be observing for any power loss. Might need an early first service... which I was thinking to do anyway as I do a lot of city driving. Btw the colour of the oil was light brown compared to the thick black yesterday. It's all mixed now I guess.
