On a side note, it's interesting to see that tyre pressure is recommended at 37-38psi, for low loads, 40-43 for a laden vehicle, and 60psi for the spare....

When mine was delivered it was at around 30-32 psi. after a few weeks I managed to check it, and they were quickly changed o placarded recommendations..
completely altered the handling and completely ruined the comfort...

i'm not yet game enough to venture off to the spare....

The spare at 60psi is fine.... it's just like bike tyres run at 110psi... it's a very different tyre to the regular car tyres.

but then later in the tabulated form, it has the 155kw GTI requiring 98RON.

          that's misinformation at it's best.

about to take image of fuel filler door...
That wasn't a good link, the actual release from VW had GTI mentioned. Prior to this all cars had to use 98, the GTI has always had to run 98.

The fuel filler door says super premium unleaded which is 98 so I'm guessing that the wrong labels were used for a period of time as everything else including service docs, brochures and so on say 98 RON.

My MY09 also has "MIN 5 RON/ROZ" on the filler cap. The manual says to refer to the filler cap for the correct fuel, so if "the wrong labels were used for a period of time", that would be a pretty damn serious error. However, there was a series of articles about the GTI when it was first due for release in the 2nd half of 2009 that specifically mentioned the reduction of the fuel requirement. There were more articles about the Skoda, too.

So yeah - they're still saying "Minimum 95", they just don't have the "Recommended 98" on the label anymore. I'll still be filling mine up with the best quality fuel available

They're saying super premium unleaded which is 98 and they have 95 minimum. They have put the incorrect stickers on a batch of GTI's by the looks of it as 95 has never been recommended for the GTI and it appears to be mainly used on Skoda models from what I can find on a search of the part number.

Just had a look in the GTI glossy brochure from dealership and in the pull out specifications insert under "technical specifications"
                      this is what is states:

Fuel type (recommended) Premium unleaded 95 RON minimum

I know and understand it says minimum, but it is stating that 95 RON is the "recommended" starting point.

As a first time Euro car owner and completely new to turbo's, I am now thankful that the salesman strongly suggested we
use 98 RON over 95 RON, he stated that it would keep the engine cleaner, so we took his advice, otherwise we could have quiet
eaily ended up using 95RON for no other reason but we didnt know different.
Of course I would have been put straight on this forum thread though

                        No the documentation is correct.
As I've said and Maverick has said and the press releases have all said its "95 RON minimum". It is then up to the consumer whether they want to put in 95, 98 or higher

For those that disbelieve the decreased fuel consumption by using 98 over 95, I have consistently (over 3 cars and 10 years) obtained a .5l/100km advantage using 98 over 95 RON.
I check every tank fill (not electronic readouts) and have seen this advantage over a 5.7l commodore, a 6cyl commodore and now the 118 TSI.
I wouldn't use anything else than 98 RON, even though the Commodores only recommend 91 RON (min)

So some members' statements above are actually incorrect because VW is actually recommending 95 RON for the GTI - in multiple pieces of literature. As I stated before, there were articles written by journalists prior to the GTI's release that recommended fuel requirement was lowered:

                                http://www.caradvice.com.au/38849/ne...-ron-unleaded/

I don't believe (perhaps naively) that these journalists picked this information out of thin air - it would have been released by VWA. If VW didn't recommend 95, then they would not have released such information. They would also write "98RON only," or "98 minimum" in their literature and on their fuel caps. Their literature would specifically state not to use 95, or only to use it in emergencies only and that repeated use could damage the engine.

I'm not picking on anyone for the sake of it, everyone is human and makes mistakes.

For the record, I only use BP Ultimate and have instructed my missus to do the same when she fills up the car. Despite my objections to BP as a company, they do make some good fuel. Damn them.
