[QUOTE=jameshero;1117596]~76,000km, have always used BP ultimate except for a tank of Shell 98 here and there
Yeah I'm around 70,000km here always use shell vpower! It's not looking good, clearly it seems this engine is a damn lemon!!
So you getting an engine rebuild? Let us know how it all pans out.
Good luckMY11 VW Golf 118tsi, Silver, 6 Speed Manual, MDI, RCD510 touch screen, tinted windows.......more to come.

Hi all,
I'm Stefano. I have a GOLF MK6 with the notorius 118 TSI engine!
I'm sad to hear you in Australia have MY 11 engine failures. My car is MY11 and it was born with the 24s4 update. Today my engine has 100.000 KM with no problem.
When the car had 70.000 I executed a remap to increase power but also to increase injection and lower piston edges peak of temperature.
Reading the dedicated thread I can find the same problems and considerations of Italian forums but now we haven't a lot of MY11 failure cases to understand if the issue is definitely solved or not!
Thanks,
S.

I've just got my engine lamp lit. after using OBD2 reader to check the error code, it shows P0301 cylinder 1 misfire detected. my factory warranty has just ended in dec. Is it likely a spark plug issue? should I send my car to VW to check? anyone has similar experience? how much did you end up spend on fixing it?

Yes take your care to Vw. It's just out of warranty and I'm sure they'll do a goodwill repair considering it's only 3 years old. As long as you have kept up the servicingMY11 VW Golf 118tsi, Silver, 6 Speed Manual, MDI, RCD510 touch screen, tinted windows.......more to come.

Hi all - we've just had an engine rebuild on our 2010 TSi. All pistons replaced as one had cracked, but not a crated in engine.
We're trying to decide whether to now keep this car with the rebuilt engine (as it's got nice specs and drives well when it's working), or does the engine still suffer from a fundamental design issue, and the rebuilt engine will also fail sooner than other less stressed engines?
I guess in the same boat as the earlier poster Alissa http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...ml#post1056567
What I'm reading between the lines is that with the revised ECU, a rebuilt engine should be OK. But, there's always the issue with the DSG gearbox.
I'd just like the car to work without major failure for at least the next 4-5 years.Last edited by syd; 11-03-2015, 10:45 PM.2010 Golf TSi & Polo GTI White MY12.5 - VIC

Got the car back today, was a rebuild. Cost was fully covered despite being out of warranty by 8 months. All Pistons were replaced and there's a 2 year warranty on the repair.Originally posted by fully View PostSo you getting an engine rebuild? Let us know how it all pans out.
Had previously had a new timing chain tensioner fitted but following the rebuild there were timing issues so a new tensioner and chain were fitted. Could a stretched timing chain have caused the issue?

Good to hear that you weren't out of pocket (apart from the inconvenience). Given the history on these engines I'd suggest that it would have happened irrespective of the timing chain though this probably wouldn't have helped.Originally posted by jameshero View PostGot the car back today, was a rebuild. It's going to be that they put the young tech on the job with minimal/no supervision. One of my bugbears with dealer servicing is they use the lowest cost labour and charge the highest rates.
And if they stuff up they can usually get either VW or the customer to pay.

Another MY10 118TSI Golf (wagon) to add to the list with two cracked pistons. Happened about a week ago about 80km from home and the car was towed straight to the local VW dealer.
Have recently heard back that Head Office will cover 100% of costs of an engine replacement which I'm relieved about. Not sure if I'll hang on to the car, but will see how it behaves with the new engine ... and see how the DSG behaves too.MY11 Golf 118TSI C/line Sports Wagon, Candy White

Golf 118 TSI Engine Failures: Resolved via Service Campaign 24S4
If it's a new engine you should be good for another 80,000km
Seriously I think the engines getting built now are a lot better than those 5 years ago. Plus software has been changed to fix a lot of the issues.
It's quite possible that damage has been done to your old engine prior to the software updates to "fix" the issue. The new engine running the latest software from brand new should theoretically have a lot longer life expectancy.
So with a new engine and the latest software I'd be fairly confident that it should last another 5+ years.
As to whether to hang onto it that's a personal decision that only you can make. One has to question how much longer VW will continue to fix these cars for "free" and when they wipe their hands of the problem. You probably don't want to be owning the vehicle when this happens.
The 7 speed DSG... well that's another story for a different thread.
