My third set of rims on my car since I got it in July. Audi R8-V10 replicas 18x8 ET45 in hyper silver.

I had A5 replicas 18x8 ET45 in the same colour.

235/40R18 is the best fit for what you need.

              GTI Stock 17" = 225/45R17
              Actual Speed: 60 mph 100 km/h
              Speedometer Difference: -

              GTI Stock 18" = 225/40R18
              Speed: 59.7 mph 99.5 km/h
              Speedometer Difference: 0.434% too slow

              GTI 235 width = 235/40R18
              Speedometer1: 58.9 mph 98.3 km/h
              Speedometer Difference: 1.722% too slow

              GTI 235 width alternative = 235/35R18
              Speedometer1: 61.2 mph 102. km/h
              Speedometer Difference: 2.053% too fast

ET44 is an aggressive offset so a 235 might end up rubbing on the guards a little bit. 225 is generally the width most people go with although you would have to check the manufacturers specs to see if its legal to run them on an 8.5" wide rim. The slightly stretched sidewall profile will aid clearance though.

So 225 35 18 is a bit too small then?

This. Go the 225's if you are someone that cringes at the sound of a bit of rubbing, unless you are running cheap rubber and don't care.

yeah. 225/40/18 is the correct size and thats what you get if you order a vw with 18" wheels

What's the standard width on the 18's? I had 18x8 with the 225 40 and I don't really like teh stretch sidewall look.

different brands of tyres will mount differently so there is no definative answer. Some wont look stretched at all whilst other brands of tyre tend to look quite narrow. At the end of the day I dont think a 225 on an 8.5" rim is a massively stretched fitment. A slightly angled sidewall is ideal when there is a possibility of clearance issues though.

Just having a bit of a read most manufacturers rate their 225/40s to fit on up to a 9" rim so legality wise its fine.

It's more than 3% out of spec... Many places don't recommend that.

                                Even on an 8.5" width?
