One day as I was reversing into my garage my wife told me that the reversing light was only working on the LH side. I sent an e-mail to Dermot Munroe at Wangara VW and he confirmed the LH side was the reversing lamp and the RH side the fog lamp.

As is my TDI — actually, the entire Golf lighting setup is too complex and I find its operation quite wierd. Reaching for a rotary switch on the dash puts me in mind of my first car, a Dodge, which was made in 1923.

My old MX83R Cressida had everything one could need — apart from high/low/flash beam on the wiper lever it all worked off the indicator stalk, was handy to operate and never missed a beat in 21 years.

Incidentally, the only lighting failure in all that time was one front indicator bulb — DIY replacement took less than a minute and cost $1.

Haha, I'd just head down to the dealer to sort it out

I really like the rotary dial on the dash for the light operation. To me it makes more sense. ESPECIALLY once you have the rain/light sensor which turn them on and off automatically. Then you almost never need to touch the dial. Would be a waste having it on an indicator stalk.

I agree - the stalks should be saved for frequently used stuff that you need to access whilst driving/moving. Switching the lights on is not really that frequent-a-task.. and its not like its far away

Exactly. Apart from one time that there was really bad fog, the only time I ever touched the headlight dial is with a cloth whilst I was cleaning the interior!
