OK guys, i just took delivery of my new iPhone holder yesterday. I gort sick of the windscreen mount one continually falling off while i was driving.
Went for an air vent mounted type.
Cost the princely sun of AU$10.99 delivered.
A few pics.
The top part has a hook that goes around the fin of the vent and then a spring loaded clamp on the outside holds it in place with the 2 legs to provide support .
It aint going anywhere now and the phone holder bit is very secure, clipping on all 4 corners of the phone.
Location wise its less in the way than the windscreen mount was and also gets away from the concern that in an accident if the curtain airbag was to deploy the phone would have become a projectile inside the car.
There are 'hole less' brackets out there that you remove the trim around the radio and screws that hold the climatic controls secure the bracket to the centre console, it is designed to come out beside the climate adjuster and through the gap between the fascia and console. I have one in my MKV and another in our 308 and they work well and are in a good location that does not impede anything. I then got an iphone passthrough cradle from the same crowd. I don't have pics, but this is the seller and I would recommend it as a viable solution (and as my stock trade is selling Apple equipment, I'd suggest you forget about those clip on the vent solutions if you care about your car).

I care for my car and i have no issue with this type of bracket, I'd certainly rather use that than having to dismantle the dash to wedge a bracket in.
I don't own an iPhone although I nearly did. I got the far more capable Google Nexus Phone instead. But my wife has one and I just popped her Belkin cradle into my MK6 for the hell of it to see how it fits.
If you are after a simple neat installation that works well this might fit the bill. On the rear of the charger there is a USB outlet to charge other stuff AND a 3.5mm outlet to feed the audio to your MK6. You can quite readily run a lead from this back to your AUX input in the center armrest.
The cradle itself allows the phone to rotate between 9, 12 & 3 O'Clock positions if you prefer it landscape. The button at center bottom contains and extra Mic for hands free use. Single Press the button to answer or hang up calls. Double & Triple press does other stuff which I cannot recall.
Main bummer is you also need to plug the 3.5mm lead visible at top left of the phone in, to get "audio out" feeding down to the other end of the device and its 3.5mm outlet.
If you dont do this it still charges fine and uses the phones speaker. But the audio does not pass on to your Aux input.
There are two version of this Belkin iPhone kit. This one with the 3.5mm Aux out and another that included an FM transmitter. I wouldn't recommend the FM transmitter version as it has had bad reviews. Both still require you to plug the 3.5mm jack into the phone itself for audio to feed to your car.
Still it is a solution to consider for the Iphone MK6 combination. It is fairly neat and tidy, Charges the Iphone well, can be used with a case on the phone and it feeds audio to the car if you can be bother to hook up the 3.5mm leads.
PS forgot to mention it cost ~ $60 from memory.

You get all this in the one above, for half the price
Thanks for that logger. I have been wondering for a while how those bendy-arm cradles work in the horizontally position 12V port in my MKV but it seems that it is flexible enough to be quite useful. Might have to check that out
Yeah the stalk whilst stiff, is not stiff enough to prop the iPhone up in the middle betwen my two heater control knobs. (not that you would want it there anyway). You generally need to arrange it in a positition where it leans on something like the left of the center console as in the picture. Otherwise it will tend to drift about when you hit bumps. Where the stalk attaches to the cradle proper there is pivot that allows you to rotate the phone left or right to landscape orientation and when doing so the phone will stay put in its new orientation. As the Belkin stuff is of a reasonable quality, the charger will be half decent and should have sufficient milliamps to charge the phone and run the GPS concurrently.
