Try this Brodit Clip (654261 ProClip). This neat mounting bracket clips into the original Golf surround. This clip is available for the VI. I can't get the picture to embed, but try the link:

I have it in the windscreen on the right hand side, phone itself just sits pretty much above the steering wheel (but not in the way) so its pretty easy to dial etc without having to reach too far (when stopped of course)currrently... MY10 GTI | DSG | Candy White | Sunroof | 18's | BT | MDI

about the size of the vents i am not sure what holder would fit in there DLO perhaps

I have a similar one to the above in my Golf. I have it sitting on the right hand drivers side air vent. Its in a neat spot, quite visible if you're using it for sat-nav etc.
I'll see if I can take a pic to show you what it looks like sitting in there.
