Do you actually use the DSG, or is it always in automatic mode?

  • Another way to drive a DSG at highway speed (or even as low as 80K), select "S" and set cruise. It will change up to 6 (not sure about 7 speeders) and happily cruise until you apply light pressure to the gas and it eagerly kicks back a couple of gears for overtaking.

    • Yep, the only way to get into S7 is to enable cruise control. Jumps down to 4th at Fwy speeds.

      • The DSG does take some getting used to, to drive it smoothly (especially if you're used to a manual, or a traditional slush box auto), but once you do it's great. As someone before me has said very well, it's a jack of all trades, master of none. For the majority of us who use our GTI or R as a daily driver, the small "compromise" of not having full manual control is almost irrelevant. Once you learn the throttle control required to drive the DSG smoothly, it's great. I do about 2500km a month, most of it spent around the city, some of it on the highway and a tiny bit of it on the race track, so the flexibility for me is a huge feature.

        I used to say I would never buy an auto in a performance car, until I first test drove the MK6 GTI DSG at it's release in 2009. I wanted one ever since - and eventually got one! That being said, I still would not buy a CVT or torque converter auto vehicle. But give me a double-clutch automated manual any day!

        Of course, I am still partial to simple cars with a basic chassis and a manual gearbox, so if I ever get enough garage space for a weekend toy, that's probably what it will be.

        • Looks like Clutch #2 is slipping (revs go up and down when requesting power in even numbered gears). Is that just a clutch pack I need replacing?
          Some say he was the Stig... all we know is that he drives a VW Transporter.

          • My wife will allways drive it in Auto form , but when i get a chance it will mostly be as close to a manual experience as possible .

            • I put the stick in manual when I'm having a bit of a hoon, but that's not often as it's not my primary hoonmobile. I use temporary manual mode when I'm looking to merge or change lanes, just to get it in the best gear before I make a move. Other than at the track, full manual mode is most valuable when I need to make a tricky right turn across traffic, the standard auto map likes to shift out of first quite early even at WOT (unless you go so hard you light it up), which is not ideal.

              I find driving normally in full manual mode just feels a bit weird, almost pointless. The auto mapping is pretty good and generally does what I want it to do most of the time.

                "Just a clutch pack" sounds like it would be a 5 min job to slide a new one in. I reckon you'd be better to reset the adaptations of the clutch first. Chances are that'll fix it. Sounds to me like the electronic leg that presses your clutch pedal needs a reboot that's all.

                Cruising on Highway I leave mine it D. But when I go off piste I use the manual mode & S quite a bit.

                    • Guys whats the difference between a wet DSG and a Dry DSG and between the 6 speed DSG USED in the Golf GTI and the 7 speed DSG used in the Polo GTI.

                        • Wet DSG is an older/more reliable system that is rated to handle more power/torque.
                          Wet DSG requires an expensive oil change every 60,000km ($1200+)

                          Dry DSG is newer tech which some early adopters found had some issues
                          Is rated to only handle 240nm of torque but many have exceeded this (APR, etc) without issue
                          Doesn't need the expensive oil change since it's "dry"

                            No there is a much quicker and simpler way to reset the clutch adaptations only.While not resetting the rest of the DSG. Essentially all you need to do is apply basic settings to the appropriate field.. Have done this numerous times myself into the past.

                            Will look it up in my notes and get back to you.

                            Just dug it out of my personalised OAM label file... Apply Basic settings to MB 180 or 200. this is where the adaptation counts for the clutches live (180=k1 200=k2) Flushing either will flush the other clutch well. So does no matter which one you do. Then see how your K2 clutch behaves after you have given it time to re-adapt. You will see the counts grow from zero over time. No need to do the test drive stuff as the car will do it automatically as each criteria is met. Although you can drive some of it if you wish to speed the "learning".

                              • I drive mine in manual mode all the time. Hardly ever use automatic mode.......
