if you're technically minded you can track the wiring from the Body Control module (BCM), through the loom to the seat using this:

Given it's both sides that aren't happy it's possibly a BCM or wiring/plug issue (it can do strange things if it plug or even light globe contacts get corroded etc). Have you had someone with a VCDS cable have a look at it? If not you can find some one local on here to help.
