Badges annoy me so I got rid of mine with mild citrus solvent to start breaking down the double sided tape that holds them on, then some waxed dental tape to work the badges off and a clean up with polish.
I also used a credit card slid under the bottom of the badge set to protect the surface as I used a hook tool to pull the top of the badge away from the surface.
Looks much cleaner, I'm happy.
PS: No holes, just tape.

Add me to the list of people taking badges off. For one, it makes it so much easier to wash the car around that area. Secondly it just looks better. I'd tick the box if they had a factory option for it.
The only badge offence people should be taking aim at is those who put badges of higher spec cars on their pov pack.....not looking at 318i drivers or anything!
But it isn't that hard. I don't like the idea of using any type of product. I've had good results just using a hair dryer to heat up the glue/tape and then slowly pulling the badge off. Then give it a good clean.

You also have a single R badge on the front grill:
Would you also remove that? Or just the one on the rear?

I mean, I know that even the single 'GTI' badge on the back can be annoying to polish and things, but with the Golf R you have a single letter under the left taillight, and because of the black box of the new R logo, the inside of the R is also filled in, making it one of the easier badges to polish and wash around.

i don't mind it either way.
i do think without the badge it does look cleaner.
As for taking it off, reading, and seeing photos of other golf owners, its the same technique. Heat it up, then use the fishing line.
Be sure to post pics once done
