  • Anyone de-badged their tailgate?

    Hi All,
As above - anybody debadged the tailgate on their MK6? I'm thinking about removing the Golf & TSI badges from the lower part of the bootlid but wanted to check if anybody else has had issues doing this before I give it a go.

Far as I can tell they're only stuck on and there should be no holes behind the letters?

The usual heat gun + fishing line trick work nicely?

    Thanks
    R

Why would you want to do that?

Because it looks a thousand times cleaner. Take a look at the back of a GTI sometime to get an idea...

Even better here's a quick photoshop

Was that really necessary? Its obviously his car/opinion. If he thinks it makes it look cleaner, then so be it.

I'd rather someone who has a thing for removing badges then one who has a penchant for sticking ones on

I agree. Car badges have always annoyed me. Much easier to wash and wax without them. Serve no purpose at all except to say you paid more or less for your car than someone else did. Rear of my CC is badgeless ex factory so you have to know the tailpipe differences to know I am driving the slow one.

Or I could have one of those TSFI (Too slow for instance) badges.

On a further note, a lot of car badging even defies good typographic design with a mix of fonts that look terrible.

Also nothing to tempt the vandals to steal and damage your paint in doing so.

In my opinion (and that's all it is) one should be able to badge deletion as an option. Just like the ugly monster front number plate holder on the GTI should be.
You know you are getting old when you cancel your order for a 3.6 CC and buy an Icelandic Gray TDI CC instead.

I must say the back end does look remarkably clean sans badges, but I would never dream of removing them from mine. I want people to know that the car that's just left them in the dust is a Golf TDI.

Thankyou to those of you who were capable of adding a reply with some intelligence. Yes, the badges annoy me when I detail the car (which is quite regularly) and from a design point of view I just think the rear end looks much better without them. Every time I see a GTI (which only has a small GTI badge in one corner and nothing else) it reminds me that I like the idea of removing the badges. I really don't care if it makes it harder for others to work out that it's a Golf TSI to be honest - I know what car it is and that's all that really matters.

Anyway, sounds like I will have to use my usual method and hope for the best. Will post pics when I get around to it.

Do it... Do it! I think it looks pretty good with the clean back.
re how to do it, I remember reading here that someone had done the hot glue gun and fishing wire before and it worked a treat. If you do a search for it you should find it... but I imagine that's the best was to do it... Can you check with the dealer / mechanic to see if there any screws, etc holding the badge in place..

oooohhh!! i thought you meant de-badging as in removing the rear vw sign ( which is the integrated boot lid handle ).

i thought it was possible to order new cars without badges...? thus inferring that they're only held on with glue...

i do like badge-less new golfs. they look awfully smooth.

Personally I've had best debadging results using boiling water and fishing line. I know it sounds drastic but the boiling water eats the glue quickly and easily without damaging the paint. The badge comes off with barely no glue residue left on the bodywork.

In terms of the aesthetics, its completely personal preference. In my opinion you should do it as I think it looks great.

May as well do it looks good either way, just keep them to put back on if you sell it as you get more for cars that haven't been stuffed around with or that are put back to stock , even though it's just a badge .
