  • I'm having insurance problems relating to damage to my Tiguan following Perth's recent hail storm. If anyone here thinks they might have some advice to offer, click here for my thread in the Tiguan section and a link to some photos of my car. Thanks for any help!

    • Just read your thread and looked at the pics. Very similar damage to my Golf except that my car had damage to the roof and bonnet. Just wondering... if the second assessor said the car was a 'goner', why didn't they go with that?
I had two people look at my car - the first one was going to have 'paintless dent removal' guys look at it, the second just said straight out that it was going to heaven....
Did you get damage to the roof and bonnet as well or just the side?

Thanks for your reply, Nic. My roof and bonnet are being replaced as are the two right hand side doors. The side and tailgate are going to be repaired in place, which I really don't think is acceptable, given the damage done to the car... I'm going to keep fighting this as much as possible.

Until I see the legislation, I don't know what "rare" or "vintage" means. They may pick an arbritrary year (as has been done with individual imports) or have a set period, or need car club membership. I don't trust politicians.

                        • A work collegue of mine had his MK6 Golf damaged by the hail storm here in Melbourne a while ago. He is insured with Allianz. It took quite a while for them to arrange an inspection. When it was inspected (dark wharehouse, white car) they said with dent removal man present that it could be repaired.

He was unhappy with the thought of it being repaired, and so asked for VW to inspect the car with Allianz there to verify the damage.

I looked over the car prior to inspection, and the damage is Roof, 30-40 hail stone dents, N/S all the way down the side front guard, front and rear passenger doors, including rear quarter panel. Bonnet, many hail stone dings.Rear tailgate at the top near the roofline.

I said if it were my car I would want them to write the car off as its less than 6 months old and only done 6K.

He spoke to Allianz and said that if the car was not going to be a write off, which they say it most definateley isn't,that he wants the car to be repaired without body filler,as the car when new didn't have it so why should it have it now.I think that is fair enough. They have said he is being pedantic about the repair. He contacted the Insurance ombudsman who basically said he is powerless to to anything a insurance companies were a law unto themselves. He also agreed once repaired that the car would probably never be the same and in a few months the repairs would then start to show through.

In this day and age I can't believe Insurance companies negativity on doing the right thing by the customer.

My advice was that upon completion before he signs the insurance satisactory note that he get the car indepentley examined through vic insure to make sure its O.K. otherwise refuse to sign.

                          • What sort of prices are those damaged Mk5 GTI's going for? Some of them look very tasty, but if they are going for > 22k it's not worth it. Some private sales are asking 22k now.

                            • colleague of mine had his car written off recently in the Perth storms.

The car was insured for $25k, so he was paid that by the insurance compnay.

He then purchased the car back friom the insurance company for $5k and has received quotes for repair of $8k.

He now has to wait 12 months to be able to book it in for repairs.

The only real downside is that for the next 12 months, he can only get 3rd party insurance

Are you sure he'd be able to get comprehensive insurance even after he has the repair done?
Many (all in Sydney?) insurance companies will not give comprehensive on a car which has previously been written off...
