From memory tapping the accelerator isn't enough for it to search out a higher gear, it just results in the car accelerating when that really wasn't the purpose, maybe after accelerating for a while it will end up in a higher gear keeping the revs down, but taking that action doesn't make sense.
To me sometimes it makes sense to not have engine braking occur in these sort of circumstances - ie. often going down a big hill means you'll shortly be heading back up one. In the interest of limiting emissions and petrol consumption it would make sense to let the car naturally build speed down the hill to use it when going back up. Of course this isn't always the case, and engine braking can otherwise be very handy - so that's why it would be nice if there was a quick and easy way to tell the car to let gravity do it's thing.
I guess Ryan's flick it over to manual and knock the gears up is the best solution at the moment if the noise is annoying, otherwise let it be. It just doesn't 'sound' very refined - and only talking sound here before someone misconstrues what I'm saying

That's absolutely not the case with my GTI 6sp gearbox. The slightest touch on the throttle in such a situation and it drops int a higher gear immediately.

I could be wrong. 7spd in the 118tsi of course so that could also be the difference... and how long after tapping it to move it into a higher gear does it commence engine braking and drop it lower again? .. if at all that is
My car often will coast down a hill ok in the same gear, it's only when I'm lightly touching the brake that it drops from 7th to 4th or 5th. I've never tried touching the accelerator as I'm trying to slow down instead of speed up. I feel that the car could wait a little longer before shifting down, but I don't really mind switching to manual in any case. When I go up the next hill the car has enough torque and revs to pull me up and as a bonus I get to hear that lovely supercharger rumble.
I find that with paddle shifters, if you use the + paddle to select top gear, the gears will automatically change down as the car slows, but not as aggressively as if it is left in Drive mode.

What happens is this - I drive 60-70 km/h in D7, rolling essentially. Then the road starts going uphill and the car is still in D7. The revs are about 1500 and when you'd expect it to jump to D6 or D5 it stays in D7 but starts stuttering, just like if you were driving manual car 20km/h in 5th gear and press accelerator all the way. Exactly the same.
Now I have to press accelerator half way or even more to kick into D6 or D5. This doesn't happen always, somethimes it goes nicely in D6, no problem at all. But my problem occurs at least 3-4 times a day.
I tried going into manual, slowing down to 40-50km/h in 7th and pressing accelerator. while you can feel the car is struggling to pull there is no stutter at all, just when in auto.
I notice that a very slight stuuter is also present when accelerating in other gears, sometimes is not noticeable but most of the time it's there, even ever so slight. Even my wife noticed it.
Also, when shifting gears in manual mode, sometimes it's instant sometimes it takes about 1-2 seconds to switch the gear, especially when downshifting, e.g. from 4th to 3rd.
When in heavy traffic the car now feels very jumpy going through D1/2/3, while it was always smooth as.
It's the 118 TSI, one years old, 26000km with new engine fitted at 15000. Yes, that software thing.
The fuel consumption is gone from 6.5 to 8.0 for exactly same daily trip, exactly same driving style and conditions. And I also noticed some rough idling, not only when cold (that's ok) but at all times.
Any deas, any experiences? Is my DSG cactus?

I thought this was pretty much normal, it's how it is in our 7speed polo, it's pretty painful that you have to push it all the way down to the floor past that little click before it will drop down a gear sometimes.
Personally I think VW needs to spend a bit more time on the programming of the DSG, the other day whilst driving normally and sitting at 60km/h it changed down instead of up for some reason, felt like we just hit a brick wall and I thought the thing was going to blow up it made such a big clunk noise, all good though and back to normal on the next gear change.
I noticed there is a lot less issues with the 6 speed DSG in my golf R but still some things which are annoying. Instead of the big delay on take off that's really apparent in the 7 speed DSG I have found that sometimes it tries to take off but it sounds like when you slip the clutch for ages in a manual car and it hardly moves anywhere then you almost get collected by the other car speeding towards you, only does this sometimes but could end in tears.

I had the same problem on my 118 tsi dsg.
Hence the change to a mk6 gti 6 speed manual.
So much more reliable.
Not planning on going back to dsg Till they fix all the problems.
Hey guys, took the R outbfor another wrap last night, and had been cruising in a high gear like 5th or 6th for about 5 minutes straight at maybe 50-60km/h.. So very slow.
As I go over a speed bump, I go to (half-travel of the pedal) floor it, and it just revved out like it was in neutral. Once it nearly hit redline and I backed off, it then finally engaged.
Needless to say I didn't go straight home after that, so i went for a short strap but all seemed fine onwards from that. Tried LC twice and no problem. Shifted through a few gears and took a few corners just to "test" it and it seemed absolutely fine, now.
A little clunk etc is to be expected.. But a proper miss of gear? Is that normal ? It's only happened once I'm the 870kms.
get it looked at... a little clunk when changing gears? no... should be smooth. mine used to be great when in "manual" mode and would change all the time really smooth but in auto it would clunk between gears when under about 50% throttle, hard throttle and it would be better.
missed gears is a concern... mine started to do it in first on hills. would rev but not engage the gear.
have had mine replaced since and its magnificent, super smooth changes that you struggle to detect even under moderate acceleration etc.
