  • With hill start assist, I presume you don't need to use a handbrake for a hill start then? Looks like I'll have to get used to that, got a test drive booked for the next weekend, so will see how it goes from there.

    • Ive recently picked up a Golf GTI DSG recently.

Quite enjoying it after driving a manual my entire life. The majority of the time I drive it in manual mode and have found using the steering wheel paddles to change my preferred option.

Got one little quirk I havent been able to find a solution I like. If I have to take off from standstill with with a large amount of lock on the wheel, by the time I am half way round the corner I want to change to 2nd but cant use the paddles as they are out of reach. At the moment I am shifting up using the stick rather than have it screaming by the time I exit the corner and point straight again.

Has anyone else had this and have any other solutions that they have found works for them?

I use the stick as well. Other than that you'll get accustomed to the wheel and will learn to sometimes press up shift paddle while the wheel is turned/off centre eventually.

In that situation I'd use the S position and revert to manual once the turn is negotiated. Try to grope the paddles when the wheel is rotating is a problem!

          • I've owned my GTI DSG since last May and still loving it. However, I've noticed that in the mornings it stays in 1st gear a lot longer than when the engine/gearbox is warm. Sometimes I can go nearly 100m and around a 90 degree bend before it will change up to 2nd. From there it's fine. Is this something that I should get checked out?

                What the Fox said.
Press the peddle like an auto. Foot off and it will coast to a halt. Coming down a gear by itself as the rpm drops. Brake and it brakes. It's as simple a car as I have ever driven. The 6 speed in the golf is as smooth as. The 7 speed in the Polo and some Golfs is more clunky on take off, but is fine once under way.

Taking off mid-turn, I use the stick for up-shifts. Sometimes it's the 1-2 shift, other times it's the 2-3 shift.

Mine will change to 2nd almost as soon as I'm rolling, which means it struggles up my drive. I make sure I use manual so it stays in 1st. However, in car parks, if I use D it changes into 2nd quite early and idles along nicely at walking pace, but changes back to 1st if I put it in manual. So I use D in carparks. Then, when I turn out onto the road, I hit the stick for the first upshift and knock it into neutral.

                    What sort of rpm?

Opposite of mine which looks for any excuse to get out of first which is fine most of the time, but a pain when it holds second even at walk pace. Dabbing the brakes to basically stationery or manual override is my only choice.

RPMs are high as if I was in manual and too busy talking to a passenger to change up. Seriously it is revving as much as I want it to and won't change up. When warmed up it's not an issue.

I guess mine does randomly hold a gear longer than usual now and then.. but your situation does potentially sound a little odd. Might be worth a mention at service or ideally see if you can try and replicate it another car.

                        • Is there a difference in power?

between "s" mode and manual mode on the golf R?
Im curious to know because my R feels quicker and more powerful in "s" mode as opposed to Manual mode.
                          or have I gone nuts?

                          • You've gone nuts. There is no power difference.
The DSG is just better at keeping the car in its power band than you.

S mode has different DSG settings for changing of gears. I'd say the S mode is aggressive and D mode is sedate.
