So after 67,000km of trouble-free motoring I experienced the DSG "flash of death" yesterday afternoon. Turning right from a major road into a shopping centre car park, car went into neutral. Thankfully I had enough momentum to enter the driveway fully. Pushed the car to one side, turned off the engine, waited for a while then turned the engine on again, and the gear indicator in the MFD was still flashing (I did this several times). Car had to be put on the back of a truck and is going to VW Monday morning.
Experienced the shudder from 1st to 2nd (although not all the time and only when I'd driven for about 30 min). Had the 37G7 software upgrade at the 60,000km service in October '12 which fixed the shudder issue.
Hopefully VW get this sorted. Out of warranty by 6 months, fingers crossed for a goodwill repair and a loan car while they sort this out.
Was going to keep the car after the lease ends in September but now I'm not too sure...MY09 90TSI | DSG | Comfort package | Sunroof | 18" BBS CH Black wheels | H&R F+R sway bars | KW V1 coilovers | R-line exterior (F+R bumpers, skirts, rear wing, tailights) | R steering wheel | Comfortline upper/highline lower front chrome grilles | Door sill protective strips | black roof and exterior mirror caps | stainless steel exhaust tips

Update: VW have confirmed that it is the mechatronics unit that has gone bust. The service centre is putting in a goodwill claim with VW, and asked for copies of all service receipts to date. They also asked if the car has been modified in any way (answered yes to front and rear bumpers and suspension and no to engine/gearbox).
Service manager has been pleasant to deal with thus far, fingers crossed it stays that way.
Just wondering - is anyone aware of / has anyone experienced a second mechatronics unit failing?MY09 90TSI | DSG | Comfort package | Sunroof | 18" BBS CH Black wheels | H&R F+R sway bars | KW V1 coilovers | R-line exterior (F+R bumpers, skirts, rear wing, tailights) | R steering wheel | Comfortline upper/highline lower front chrome grilles | Door sill protective strips | black roof and exterior mirror caps | stainless steel exhaust tips

My Polo 2011 developed a hesitation in the dsg, and more scary it flat out refused to move when merging with traffic at times. Dealer was good, but the car issue was intermittent so hard to find. The shudder started happening and that combined with a return of the brake line rattle and dash rattled led me to conclude non German built dubs are not as good as homeland builds. That and the seven speed dsg is not as smooth or reliable as the six speed in the golfs.
All I read is problems with the 118 TSi so I opted for the 2.0 Golf and touch wood, it really feels head and shoulds above the Polo.MY18 GOLF 110TSI I HIGHLINE I Indium I Panoramic Sunroof I DAP I IP

Looking to buy a Golf/Polo. I always hear people say drive a DSG like a manual. As someone who's never driven a manual. How would you best describe the proper way of driving a DSG? I know that when reversing you should let the car come to a complete halt before you switch to drive (I do that already). When in stop/start traffic, can you ease your foot off the brake to let the car roll forward?
What are some other tips?

Love driving with the DSG. My wife hates it whilst trying to park due snatchy engagement at low speed, especially on sloping parking spots.
Having sufferred one mechatronic failure 800ks from home and the inconvenience that caused, I wouldn't buy one again anytime soon.

You can't completely drive the DSG like an auto. The only thing to keep in mind is on uphills, don't use the accelerator to "hold" your car stationary whilst at the lights. In higher powered cars, auto drivers leave their foot off the accelerator and footbrake, and the car will still "hold". Lots of auto drivers do this.
DO NOT DO THIS WITH A DSG.
If you follow this simple rule, then yes it is equivalent to driving an Auto. Break this rule, your clutch will wear prematurely. If not all your drivers can reliably obey this rule, I would not get a DSG. I also would not get a DSG if you live in a very hilly area (like Coogee in Sydney) and do lots of very steep hill starts on a daily basis.
On a manual, I've burned out clutch plates doing hill starts in Coogee (and these were once off trips). Granted this was in a cheap Jap car... but would you want your Euro car clutch plates to burn out like that?Skoda Octavia Mk3

I also was given a DSG Golf as a loan car, drove it like a normal auto, not an issue.mk VI GTI, manual, reflex silver, basic
