    Ok... this makes sense.

The MK6 Golf hatch is really a MK5.5. During the change to the "MK6" they integrated the radio antena into the rear window, and thus the only MK6 hatches to have the sharkfin antenna DO have the GPS.

But the MK6 Golf watch is a combination MK6 / MKV. So I guess that makes it a MK5.25 or something, lol. If all Golf Wagon's have the sharkfin, we could presume that they didn't get the updated radio antena in the rear window, and therefore they may or may not have the GPS antenna there as you have discovered.

So in summary for those reading:
MK6 Golf Hatch. Sharkfin is only present if the GPS antenna is installed (due to factory option of RNS-510)
MK6 Golf Wagon. Sharkfin is always present and the GPS antenna is ONLY installed if the car was optioned with RNS-510.

Golf wagons also have a different shape fin much narrower so i has it a guess the fatter fin would be the one used for Nav. I have had a golf wagon with nav but can not remember if it had a fatter fin or not ... Sorry....

If someone can post a pic of a hatch/GPS sharkfin, I will post a pic of a wagon/non-GPS sharkfin when I get home tonight.

Installed a RNS510 but contrary to guides on the Internet, I had to use a separate Gps antenna, as without it no gps signal was being picked up by the sharkfin.

There was no gps antenna connector anywhere behind the stereo, so I assumed it must have been in the block connector, but like I said... No gps signal until I plugged in the extra gps receiver antenna.

So it looks like the sharkfin is just a dummy and not hooked up to anything.
The GPS aerial terminates on a separate fakra connection, it is not and never is installed in the large connector. It plugs into the GPS aerial location on the rear of the navigation unit.

The Golf wagon comes standard with a sharkfin style aerial for radio, there are other variants available including the aerial that has a GPS antenna built in and ones that have mobile antennas built in for car kits and any combination of these is possible including all three in the one. However Australia only gets the standard unit if the car has a RCD unit fitted and it gets the standard unit with GPS aerial if the car has a RNS fitted.

Retrofitting is possible but not recommended due to cost and having to pull the car apart.

I was following a guide which said if there was a sharkfin, then you didn't need the extra antenna... I guess we can't assume what is true for the hatch is also true for the Wagon.

The mk v (apart from early years) and mk vi hatches only have the sharkfin if navigation was included at the factory. The wagon has a small sharkfin for all with a larger one fitted with navigation.
