  • Shark Fin Antenna standard? Or do you have to have GPS?

On the MK6 GTI, does the small shark fin antenna come as standard equipment on the car? Or do you have to option on the RDS510 satnav unit to have the shark fin antenna?

And if so, what style antenna does the MK6 GTI have if you don't have Sat Nav?

Shark fin is only for RNS-510 and the Antenna for the non RNS-510 is the car.. Well the The Mirror anyway so I am led to believe.. No stick like antennas for these babies.. the new Golf Wagon does have a little Shark fin standerd with or with out RNS-510. Hope that helps.

If you option in the sat nav at a later date, is the antenna added then? I'd imagine it is quite intrusive and involved removing the headliner in the car and cutting holes in the roof?

Gps antenna is installed on to or into the dash .. A lot of the guys stick them onto the glass up in the left hand corner.. to get maximum line of sight. I dont know of a way of retrofitting the shark fin without it being messy and time consuming just order nav with the car. maybe? There is no specfic kit Volkswagen Australia provides dealers with the fin included.

        Hope this helps..

So the fin is only installed when you order SatNav with the car?

Was his car a factory order? If not it's been delivered with the RNS 510 and they've replaced it with a RCD 310 or RCD 510 before delivery.

                  Golf GTI MK VI Antenna

                  Hi guys,
I have owned a MK VI GTI for 5mth now. Just noticed many other GTI have a
radio antenna (maybe not a antenna, don't know what it is) on the roof. Just wondering if that is standard because I do not have one on my roof.

Resurrecting an old thread, but I have a 2010 Golf Wagon which came with a shark fin standard, but just with the rcd-310 radio.

Installed a RNS510 but contrary to guides on the Internet, I had to use a separate Gps antenna, as without it no gps signal was being picked up by the sharkfin.

There was no gps antenna connector anywhere behind the stereo, so I assumed it must have been in the block connector, but like I said... No gps signal until I plugged in the extra gps receiver antenna.

So it looks like the sharkfin is just a dummy and not hooked up to anything.

Probably in your case it was a dummy - unless factory fitted the fin by mistake then realised the customer hadn't ordered the rns-510.

The sharkfin advice is correct for the Golf hatch, but to be honest, we haven't really had anyone with Golf Wagon's trying to do the same.
It is possible that maybe the car did come from the factory with the RNS-510 and the dealership removed it for another customer... but then it seems like a lot of effort to also remove the GPS antenna...

I can check with Dermot, but I believe this car (ex-demo) only ever had the RCD-310.

All I could find was that all Golf Wagons come with the sharkfin, and any Golf Hatchs that have the sharkfin have the GPS antenna built in.

I assumed that meant that Golf Wagons all have the GPS antenna, which wasn't correct in my case (unless it is so weak it wouldn't pick up any signal in 30mins of driving, whereas the other antenna got some within 5 mins).

It'd be interesting to see what is in the sharkfin antenna and what the point is of putting it on. Maybe because they are all built in Mexico, and the North Americans use Sat radio, its easier to put a sharkfin on ALL golf wagons/jetta sportwagens.

EDIT: so my point is that Sharkfin doesn't always = GPS antenna.
